This ‘Yellowstone’ Fan-Favorite Finds a ‘New Purpose’ in Spinoff

Luke Grimes isn’t quite ready to hang up Kayce Dutton’s cowboy hat just yet. The “Yellowstone” alum will soon star in the highly anticipated spinoff series “Y: Marshals.”  And according to Grimes, this next act will not be more of the same. The actor recently revealed exactly what drew him back to the role, and what fans can expect from the next chapter in Kayce’s story.

Luke Grimes Thought His “Yellowstone” Character’s Story Was Over

Grimes, 41, admits he initially believed “Yellowstone” was the end of the road for his character. He told People that on the last day of shooting the flagship series in Taylor Sheridan’s sprawling TV universe, he really thought it was his last day as Kayce.

“It was over to me,” he said. “It was seven years of playing a person that I’ll never see again, except for having his hat and jacket in my closet.”

But a few months after filming wrapped, a pitch for “Y: Marshals” changed everything. He explained that the idea shared with him was “very, very good and very interesting.” He added that it “really roped me in, and I think it will rope the audience in as well.”

A ‘Whole New Purpose’ For Kayce Dutton

In “Yellowstone’s” final season, Kayce had seemingly found his peace. He sold the Dutton land to Chief Rainwater and returned to what felt like his true self. Kayce finally got what he was looking for, which was his “dream life.” So when the idea of a spinoff was raised, Grimes initially questioned it.

“Where do you go from there?” he recalled thinking. “If it was just like, ‘Well, he’s happy’—we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool.”

The spinoff storyline that eventually landed on his desk was compelling enough to change his mind. In order to say yes, Grimes made it clear that Kayce’s next chapter had to tell a “real story” that was “interesting” and “believable.”

“There’s just a whole new world for Kayce, and a whole new place for him to go, and a whole new purpose,” he said in an interview with Extra. “We’re not gonna see the old tropes anymore.”

Luke Grimes Promises Familiar Faces and Fresh Territory the “Yellowstone” Spinoff

While details about “Y: Marshals” remain under wraps, Grimes hinted that fans can expect a mix of old and new.

“There’s going to be some familiar faces, but there’s going to be a lot of new faces too, so we’ll see how that all feels,” he shared.

For Grimes, the return to the “Yellowstone” universe is exciting, but it comes with some emotional baggage. He says that wrapping filming on the Kevin Costner-led series was “a lot bigger of a life moment” than he thought it would be.

“To try to put that show away—it was hard. It was really hard. It was like losing a family in a way,” Grimes admitted.

He thought Kayce’s story had ended, but Grimes is now excited for his character to step into a new world. With “Y: Marshals,” Grimes hopes to do right by the fans, the character, and the legacy of “Yellowstone.”

“Nobody wanted it to be over,” he said. “A lot of us actors kind of didn’t want it to be over, and the studio and network certainly didn’t want it to be over.”

Now, it looks like Kayce Dutton’s story is far from finished.

A premiere date for “Y: Marshals” has not been confirmed. But, we do know that the series will air on CBS and episodes will also be available on Paramount+.
