Luke Grimes Fuels Speculation About Monica and Tate’s Fate in ‘Y: Marshals’

Luke Grimes is officially returning as Kayce Dutton in CBS’s “Y: Marshals,” the first “Yellowstone” spinoff to hit network TV—but fans may be disappointed to learn that Monica and Tate’s fate in the series is still unclear.

Luke Grimes Leads Kayce’s ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoff—But What About Monica and Tate?

“Yellowstone” fans finally got a bit of good news: Grimes will reprise his role as Kayce in the upcoming CBS spinoff “Y: Marshals.” While the series will follow Kayce as he trades ranch life for the badge of a U.S. Marshal, it seems not everyone from the Dutton household is guaranteed a return.

In an interview with Cowboys & Indians, Grimes confirmed his involvement in the procedural-style drama but gave a cryptic answer when asked about his on-screen wife, Monica (played by Kelsey Asbille), and son Tate (Brecken Merrill).

“I’m not really supposed to talk too much about it,” Grimes said. “I’ll say there’s definitely going to be some familiar faces. I’m not going to be the only character from ‘Yellowstone’ in the show. There’s going to be some people that you know and love.”

The ambiguity has sparked speculation that Monica and Tate may not be part of Kayce’s next chapter. At the end of “Yellowstone,” the family settled on a small slice of the ranch, with Kayce stepping back from public life to be with them. The new spinoff, however, suggests a major shift—Kayce reenters law enforcement, possibly leaving family behind once again. Whether the storyline follows him navigating this tension or starting fresh remains to be seen. What’s clear is that the Duttons’ so-called happy ending may already be unraveling.

Everything We Know About CBS’s ‘Y: Marshals’ So Far

The expansion of the “Yellowstone” universe continues, but with a new twist. While other Dutton siblings are getting their own shows on streaming platforms like Paramount+—including the highly anticipated Rip and Beth spinoff—Kayce’s journey will play out on network television. “Y: Marshals” will debut midseason in spring 2026 as part of CBS’s Sunday primetime lineup.

According to TV Insider, Y: Marshals” will find Kayce being part of an elite U.S. Marshals task force operating in Montana. Blending his background as a Navy SEAL and a former Livestock Commissioner, Kayce must navigate violent territory and moral gray areas in pursuit of modern frontier justice.

The official logline hints at personal stakes as well: Kayce and his team must “balance family, duty, and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region’s war on violence.”

Unlike all of creator Taylor Sheridan’s shows, “Y: Marshals” will air Sundays at 9/8c on CBS. The “Yellowstone” spinoff is set for a midseason premiere and will follow “Tracker” and lead into the new Sherlock Holmes-inspired series “Watson.”
