Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo opened up about a challenging period in their marriage during a candid conversation on their podcast, revealing how a painful betrayal early in their relationship ultimately strengthened their bond and faith.
The couple, and former “Counting On” stars, who have been married for nearly nine years, shared intimate details about a difficult experience that tested their bond during the early stages of their union. Their honest discussion offers insight into how they dealt with adversity to build the strong relationship they have today.
Difficult Time Early in Marriage
Jeremy chose his words carefully when describing the painful experience that shook their young marriage. “There was a time in our life very early on in our marriage were we experienced some … I describe it as a deep betrayal,” he shared on “The Jinger and Jeremy Podcast.” “Because you have relationships in your life that ground you, and when those shake or are removed, you feel like, ‘What am I doing?'”
The 37-year-old former professional soccer player said that the betrayal came from outside their family circle. He clarified that it involved people in his life whom he had been excited for Jinger to meet. “The betrayal wasn’t even family,” he explained. “It was people in my life that she had come into, and people I had been really excited for her to meet and engage with, and then it was difficult.”
Jeremy described the period as a moment when both he and Jinger felt deeply unsettled by the situation. The couple sought guidance from their pastor during this troubling time. They ended up receiving advice that helped shape their perspective on the experience and their marriage moving forward.
How They Grew Stronger Together
It was a difficult period. However, looking back, both Jeremy and Jinger now view the experience as a crucial learning opportunity that ultimately benefited their relationship. “This is the first time we’re even talking about [this],” Jeremy admitted during the podcast episode. “Now it’s eight years on, we’re in Los Angeles, we have friends who are family to us, we have a deep community that we’re invested in, involved in.”
The couple’s pastor provided meaningful counsel during their struggle. He told Jeremy, “I think the Lord’s teaching you how to walk alone.” Jeremy interpreted this as learning to depend more fully on their faith rather than relying entirely on other relationships for support.
Jinger contributed to the conversation by crediting their faith for providing exactly what they needed during that challenging moment. The experience taught them valuable lessons about trust, resilience, and the importance of building their marriage on a solid foundation.
Jeremy reflected on how the painful experience now serves as a source of gratitude rather than bitterness. “Now, looking back eight years later, we’re in our ninth year of marriage and we’re going, ‘Oh man, those were the greatest lessons we’ve ever learned,'” he shared. “This is the greatest thing that could have ever happened to us.”
The couple, who share three children together, continue to build their life in Los Angeles with a community of friends and supporters around them.
