Miley Cyrus’s public persona has undergone significant changes since her days playing “Hannah Montana” on Disney. After making her newest album, “Something Beautiful,” Cyrus told The New York Times that she’s looking forward to a “rebirth of how I look at my career.”
However, the singer is also aware of how each musical stage of her career has had a profound impact on her personal life. While discussing all her albums on A Spotify Podcast, she revealed how one album affected her relationship with her then-boyfriend, Liam Hemsworth, and another was a reaction to the rekindling of their romance.
Miley Cyrus Reflects on ‘Bangerz’ Era: ‘My People on the Inside Had a Hard Time’
When Cyrus released the album “Bangerz,” it was a complete 180 from her music up until that point for many people. And while she understood why her fans didn’t know what to make of it, she recalled that many of the people closest to her were confused, as well.
“My professional life was affecting my personal life a lot,” “The Voice” alum said. “Meaning that, not only the outside world had a hard time coming with me, but my people on the inside had a hard time coming with me, too. Because they’re going, like, what is this? This isn’t who we grew up with.”
“So, like my relationship,” she continued. “This was the first time me and Liam called off our engagement was during that time. And that was just because that wasn’t the “Last Song” girl.”
As an adult, Cyrus can now look back on that album and her different style more maturely. It was all about her, a 20-year-old young woman, trying to find her identity.
Miley Cyrus Explains What Inspired Her Innocent ‘Younger Now’ Era
In 2016, Cyrus and Hemsworth rekindled their relationship and got re-engaged. This influenced her next album, “Younger Now,” and she once again changed her public persona.
She was also very aware of the Hemsworth family’s public profiles, with Liam’s brother, Chris, playing Thor in the MCU, and Liam being a significant part of “The Hunger Games.”
“And so I was also representing this family,” she continued. “And so I felt I needed to, and it was my duty, too. Because my plan was, this time, I didn’t want the relationship to fall apart.”
“I think that when Liam and I split up the first time with “Bangerz,” it was because I was this provocateur and it was, like, highly sexualized,” Cyrus explained. “And so, for “Younger Now,” the album, the reason I kind of like, played into this innocence was because, I think, that was a way to keep, and a way to stay. [It] was by, if I’m younger now, if I’m less awake, as like, this sexual woman publicly, then this is going to be the way that I can keep, like, a happy home.”
What she was seeking then is precisely what she has now, years later. A “lovely personal life, and like, my career is exactly how I want it to be.”
