Adam Levine Says He’s Used to ‘Not Fitting In’ Anywhere

Maroon 5 frontman and “The Voice” coach Adam Levine has sold millions of records around the world, but the Grammy winner still doesn’t feel like he’s found his niche — and that’s quite alright with him.

On June 23, 2025, the group announced its first new album in four years, “Love is Like,” will be released in August, supported by a U.S. tour.

In an interview with Lisa Thomas of iHeartRadio’s KIIS-FM on June 17, Levine said the band is getting back to “what we used to do, which is like, not pay attention to anything at all” in terms of genres or trends. While that’s been problematic at times for record executives since Maroon 5 broke onto the scene in 2002, Levine said he’s most comfortable and successful when he’s “not fitting in.”

Adam Levine Calls ‘Love Is Like’ a ‘Very Isolated Album’

During his interview with Thomas, Levine said the new record “was, like, a very isolated album.”

“We live in Santa Barbara now,” Levine said of his wife Behati Prinsloo and their three children. “And I was in a room with very few people and producing the music kind of organically,” he said. “It’s about as organic as it gets right so like it doesn’t follow any trends, really, I don’t think.”

“Because that’s kind of how we stuck out in the beginning when we first started our career,” Levine recalled. “Like I don’t think we fit in anywhere. I think that was, in fact, like one of the biggest concerns for the record labels that we were trying to sign to, was like, ‘Oh well, these guys fit in … they’re like pop group but they’re a band but they’re this.'”

“So, not fitting in is kind of what I’m most comfortable with,” Levine said. “And I think now we’re kind of starting to not fit in again, which is great.”

Adam Levine Won’t Likely Return to ‘The Voice’ Anytime Soon

Levine was one of the original coaches on “The Voice,” launching the show in 2011 with Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, and CeLo Green. After 16 seasons, he shocked fans when he abruptly left the show in 2019, telling media outlets including “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

He announced his return to the series in June 2024, just before filming started on season 27 with Michael Bublé, John Legend, and first-time coach Kelsea Ballerini. The season wrapped in May 2025, with Team Bublé’s Adam David winning.

Soon after the show wrapped, reports surfaced that Levine didn’t love being back on the show as much as he expected, missing his sarcastic banter with Shelton. It’s already confirmed that he won’t return for season 28, which will air in the fall, but with an upcoming tour, it’s highly unlikely that Levine would be able to join season 29 either.
