Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s partnership with Netflix is reaching its natural conclusion after five productive years. The streaming giant has decided not to renew the couple’s multi-year production agreement when it expires in September, marking the end of one of Hollywood’s most talked-about entertainment deals.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex originally signed their reported $100 million contract in 2020, shortly after stepping back from their senior royal duties and relocating to Montecito, California. The partnership enabled them to establish Archewell Productions and create content aligned with their personal values and mission.
A Hollywood insider confirmed that the couple’s production deal will not be extended, due to Netflix’s evolving business strategy. “There’s no animosity from either side,” a source told The Sun. “Things have just run their course.”
The decision represents a broader shift in Netflix’s approach to large-scale, multi-project agreements. The streaming service has similarly restructured deals with other high-profile partners, including Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground production company, which transitioned to a first-look arrangement.
Despite the contract’s conclusion, both parties appear satisfied with the outcomes of their collaboration. Netflix secured significant viewership numbers and cultural impact from several Archewell Productions projects, while Harry and Markle gained a platform to share their stories and causes.
Content Success Stories and Viewing Numbers
The partnership produced five major projects over its five-year span, with varying degrees of commercial and critical success. The couple’s 2022 docuseries “Harry & Meghan” became Netflix’s most-watched documentary debut and remains the platform’s second most popular documentary series to date.
“Netflix were clever in that they got a hell of a lot of viewers for the first documentary series, and knew, realistically, it would prove the zenith of content from the Montecito pair,” a source told The Sun. “They’re not unhappy with how things turned out — they got those initial hits, and produced one of the most talked-about shows of all time.”
Other projects under the deal included “Live to Lead,” “Heart of Invictus,” and “Polo,” each focusing on different aspects of leadership, resilience, and competitive sports. Prince Harry executive-produced “Polo,” which attracted 500,000 households according to Netflix’s engagement data.
Markle’s lifestyle series “With Love, Meghan” premiered in March 2025 and achieved notable international reach, ranking in Netflix’s Global Top 10 chart across 47 countries. The show ranked No. 383 with 5.3 million views according to Netflix’s latest engagement report covering the first half of 2025.
The series featured celebrity guests including Mindy Kaling and Abigail Spencer, showcasing Meghan’s cooking and entertaining expertise from her California home. The show’s success led to multiple product launches through her As Ever lifestyle brand, with Netflix serving as a partner in the venture.
Future Projects and New Directions
The end of the Netflix deal doesn’t preclude future collaborations between the streaming service and the Sussex couple. Markle’s “With Love, Meghan” has already been renewed for a second season, which will premiere this fall with Chrissy Teigen confirmed as a guest star.
According to Entertainment Weekly, the impending contract conclusion will not impact the rollout of the lifestyle series’ second season, which has already completed filming with director Michael Steed returning to helm the project.
Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos expressed the company’s ongoing relationship with Markle’s business ventures in March, stating: “We’re a passive partner in Meghan’s company, and it’s a big discovery model for us right now.” This partnership extends beyond traditional content creation into the consumer products space through As Ever.
The couple’s original statement about their Netflix partnership highlighted their commitment to meaningful content creation: “Our focus will be on creating content that informs but also gives hope,” they said in 2020. “As new parents, making inspirational family programming is also important to us.”
Their production company, Archewell Productions, is likely to continue developing projects with various partners as Harry and Markle explore new opportunities in the entertainment landscape. The conclusion of their Netflix deal allows them flexibility to pursue diverse partnerships while building on the foundation they’ve established in California.
