Mariah Carey Names One Royal She Found ‘Cool’ to Meet in Recent Interview

Mariah Carey offered a interestingly brief response when radio hosts asked about her interactions with the Royal Family during a recent interview. She mentioned only one member even though she had previously connected with another royal through her podcast appearances.

Interviewers questioned the 56-year-old pop icon about her royal encounters ahead of her upcoming performance at King Charles’ Sandringham House. She provided a succinct answer that has sparked conversation among fans and media outlets.

Radio Interview Focuses on Royal Connections

During her appearance on “Hits Radio” this week, the host asked Carey directly if she had ever met members of the Royal Family. Her response was straightforward and short: “Fergie [Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York], I thought she was cool.”

The singer’s answer came as she prepared for her performance at the prestigious royal residence. Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York and ex-wife of Prince Andrew, has maintained her ties to the Royal Family despite her divorce.

Previous Podcast Collaboration Background

The radio interview comes three years after Carey appeared on Meghan Markle’s “Archetypes” podcast in 2022, where the two women discussed the complexities surrounding the word “diva” in an episode titled “The Duality of Diva.” Their conversation explored how certain labels can carry different meanings for different people.

During that podcast appearance, Carey had complimented Markle by calling her a “diva.” This initially caught the Duchess of Sussex off guard. “You give us diva moments sometimes, Meghan, don’t even act like,” Carey said during the podcast.

Markle later explained her initial reaction to Carey calling her a diva: “It was all going swimmingly, I mean really well. Until that moment happened, which I don’t know about you, but it stopped me in my tracks…when she called me a diva!” she shared on the podcast.

The misunderstanding was quickly clarified when Carey explained her intent. “She was talking about the way that I dress, the posture, the clothing, the quote unquote ‘fabulousness,’ as she sees it. She meant diva as a compliment,” Markle explained.

Carey later took to social media to reinforce the positive nature of her comment. She tweeted: “Really enjoyed talking to Duchess and Diva Meghan Markle about ‘The Duality of Diva.’ Yes! I called her a diva, in the most fabulous, gorgeous, and empowering meaning of the word!!!”

The two women also bonded over their shared experiences as biracial women in the public eye. “There are some similarities, like being biracial. I tend to dwell on that topic because I just can’t get over it,” Carey told Variety in 2022. “It’s always a thing, whether I bring it up or someone else does. I assume that’s why it was interesting for she and I to talk for her podcast.”

Carey’s upcoming performance at Sandringham House will be another royal connection, as she prepares to entertain at one of the monarchy’s most treasured private residences.
