King Charles and Queen Camilla attended an event to mark the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day on August 15. On the same day in 1945, Japan accepted the Potsdam Declaration. This was a significant turning point that effectively helped to end WWII.
While at the remembrance event, the royals became visibly emotional because of a thoughtful comment made about His Majesty’s cancer.

Photos from the Service of Remembrance show the King and Queen becoming emotional. The event was held at The National Memorial Arboretum in Alrewas, Staffordshire. The guests of honor were 33 men who had served in the military during WWII, BBC reports. They are aged between 96 and 105.
Veteran Yavar Abbas’s speech paid tribute to King Charles and briefly touched on his cancer treatment. It was then that the Royals became emotional, BBC reports. Abbas said he wanted “to salute my brave King, who is here with his beloved Queen in spite of the fact that he is under treatment for cancer.” Abbas is 105 years old.

King Charles’ Cancer Diagnosis

His Majesty publicly shared his cancer diagnosis in February 2024. “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted,” a statement from Buckingham Palace read, BBC reports. “Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”
The statement ended with a message about why King Charles chose to announce his cancer. The statement reads: “His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer.”
King Charles has chosen to raise awareness for cancer by sharing his own story. In April 2025, he discussed the disease and the emotional toll it had on him.
“Each diagnosis, each new case, will be a daunting and at times frightening experience for those individuals and their loved ones,” his statement read, ABC News reports.
It continues, “But as one among those statistics myself, I can vouch for the fact that it can also be an experience that brings into sharp focus the very best of humanity. It has certainly given me an even deeper appreciation of the extraordinary work undertaken by the remarkable organisations and individuals gathered here this evening. Many of whom I have known, visited, and supported over the years. And it has reinforced what I have long observed during these visits: that the darkest moments of illness can be illuminated by the greatest compassion.”
