Roll out the royal carpet—Kate Middleton slowly returning to her royal duties. The Princess of Wales is set to make a highly anticipated appearance at Westminster Abbey for a key event she was forced to miss last year. She will be joined by her husband, Prince William, and His Majesty, King Charles.
Kate Middleton and King Charles Were Forced to Miss Commonwealth Day in 2024
Year after year, the Commonwealth Day Service of Celebration at Westminster Abbey has remained a cornerstone of royal tradition. However, last year, two of the most prominent royals—The Princess of Wales and King Charles—were absent. Princess Catherine, 43, was recovering from abdominal surgery and later revealed she was undergoing treatment for cancer.
His Majesty also missed the event after being diagnosed with cancer in February. While Middleton personally announced her diagnosis in a heartfelt video message, the palace handled Charles’s news in a more formal manner. Their health battles kept them from public appearances, leaving the royal family with noticeable absences at last year’s event.
Fortunately, things are looking up in 2025. According to People, Buckingham Palace has confirmed that both Kate and King Charles will be in attendance this year. However, two other royals—the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh—will be absent, though for more positive reasons. According to Hello! Magazine, Duchess Sophie will be traveling to New York.
All the Royals Who Will Appear at Commonwealth Day
While the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh will be away, the royal lineup remains strong. King Charles, Prince William, Princess Kate, Queen Camilla, and Princess Anne will also attend. The Duke and Duchess of Gloucester will round out the royal party.
The event, set for Monday, March 10, will take place at the famed abbey, which also happens to be where the Prince and Princess of Wales got married in 2011.
This year’s Commonwealth Day theme, “Together We Thrive,” celebrates the enduring spirit and unity of the Commonwealth family.
Adding to the grandeur, the ceremony will feature performances from the Masai Cultural Arts team, “Britain’s Got Talent” semi-finalists Braimah and Jeneba Kanneh-Mason, and acclaimed soprano Aivale Cole. Music icon Joan Armatrading CBE will perform an arrangement of “Love and Affection.” High-profile guests will also include Commonwealth Secretary-General Baroness Scotland, Secretary-General elect Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey and dignitaries from across the Commonwealth. Over 700 schoolchildren and Commonwealth Games athletes will also be in attendance, making this a truly special occasion.
