‘Basketball Wives’ Star Ends Marriage After 52 Days

Basketball Wives” star Brittany Renner and rapper Kevin Gates have officially called it quits just under two months after tying the knot.

Renner confirmed the breakup during a June 7 interview with Real 92.3 LA, sharing that the two quietly married on April 6 and finalized their divorce on May 28. The sudden split surprised fans, but according to Renner, the decision came from a place of clarity and mutual understanding.

Both Renner and Gates recently converted to Islam and leaned on their faith during their short-lived marriage—and ultimately, their separation. Renner explained that Islam’s 90-day waiting period, which traditionally serves as a time for reflection and reconciliation, gave her the space she needed to reset.

“In Islam, they have a 90-day rule to where you can’t get married, you can’t get divorced, and I actually found that the 90-day reset really made my life easier,” she said. “Because now I can just focus on myself and get back to center.”

Renner converted to Islam in August 2024 and described this chapter of her life as one of deep spiritual growth. She told People that she gave the relationship her all and has no regrets about how it ended.

“I gave 100 percent. I followed my heart, and there’s no stone left unturned. I can rest knowing I gave it my all,” she said, as reported by People.

While Gates has stayed mostly private about the split, he briefly addressed it in a comment to The Shade Room, saying, “Who I love, I don’t discuss. But I wish her the best.”

Just a month earlier, Renner had spoken lovingly about Gates during the “Basketball Wives” season 11 premiere. “I’m with the person I literally dreamed of,” she said at the time.

Renner made her first solo red carpet appearance at the 2025 BET Awards on June 9, just days after going public with the divorce. When asked about how she was doing, she kept it real: “It is what it is… better to be divorced and happy,” she told The Shade Room.

Although the marriage was brief, Renner made it clear she’s walking away with peace of mind. Across interviews, she’s emphasized that the experience gave her the clarity she needed to move forward with intention.

Renner, who shares a 4-year-old son with NBA player PJ Washington, has used her platform on “Basketball Wives” to open up about her personal evolution—something she continues to lean into.

Renner said in the interview with Real 92.3 LA, “I followed my heart and that’s what more than most people can say in this world, and I have no shame in that.”
