The pair have kept their romance under wraps until now, sharing a kiss and holding up hands showing matching rings on the red carpet for the series finale premiere February 12.
The pair confirmed the engagement on Valentine’s Day, with Mary Mouser posting on Instagram, “We’re so happy to finally share that we’re engaged. This is such a special moment in our lives, the closing of one chapter and celebrating the continuation of another. We’re so grateful for the love and support, and though we’re partial to having our private moments, we’re excited to share this check-in to our world 🖤”
Buchanan shared the same post with the same caption.
Buchanan and Mouser Have Shared Friendship Moments With Fans
Since becoming castmates on the hit Netflix series in 2018, Tanner Buchanan and Mary Mouser have shared their friendship with fans. They’ve posted pictures dressed up in matching karate-themed costumes for Halloween and snaps of them playing laser tag with friends.
At the premiere for 26-year-old Buchanan’s movie “He’s All That,” 28-year-old Mouser posted pictures showing her support with the caption “GO WATCH MY BEST FRIEND FREAKING KILL IT IN @hesallthatmovie!!!

Fans Saw Hints of Secret Romance Between Buchanan and Mouser
Buchanan and Mouser never revealed that they were more than best friends until the engagment announcement. There were hints though. In a birthday post for Buchanan, Mouser wrote, “i know most normal people would post for your birthday at midnight the morning OF your bday – but we’re not normal besties. So here I am 🤍”
She goes on to say, “you are the most kind and beautiful soul of all time, I am so grateful to know you and adore you! I can’t wait to celebrate with you, for this birthday and all the other made up holidays that we create just so we can party together! You’re the greatest and you deserve the greatest! thank you with all my heart for everything bestest budddddddy!”
Another pretty big hint: The pair spent Christmas of 2022 together visiting Disney theme parks in Paris and California.
Life Does Not Imitate Art in Romance Between Tanner Buchanan and Mary Mouser
In the Netflix series, their characters had a brief romance in season 2, but it didn’t last. In fact, they spent plenty of time as enemies on the show, competing for rival dojos.
Even so, their brief on-screen romance apparently caused stress for Buchanan.
In 2020, Buchanan and Cobra Kai star Ralph Macchio interviewed each other for “Interview Magazine.” Buchanan told Macchio that the romantic scenes caused him “the most anxiety.”
“You could talk to Mary [Mouser] about this because she and I are such good friends,” said Buchanan. “When we had our first kiss scene in season two, they were asking us, ‘Are you ready?’ My heart was pounding, I was shaking. It just feels weird to go to that place, because we’re such good friends.”
Buchanan and Mouser teamed up for a MUKBANG! to go behind the scenes of season two, when the brief romance was part of the plot line.
The pair start out at the grocery store shopping together, then take their haul home where they sit on the floor eating and talking about the show.
The pair also took fans on a dojo tour.
