Sarah Jessica Parker Posts Emotional Goodbye to Carrie Bradshaw 27 Years After ‘SATC’ Debut

Sarah Jessica Parker is bidding farewell to her iconic “Sex and the City” character, Carrie Bradshaw, after 27 years. The actress who has played the character since 1998 on the HBO series and its spinoff, “And Just Like That,” posted a lengthy farewell on Instagram after it was announced that the spinoff series was ending after three seasons.

Parker, 60, captured a series of photos from the HBO franchise that included scenes with Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis, Kim Cattrall, Chris Noth, John Corbett, and more. She then posted a homage to Carrie Bradshaw, whom she noted “broke hearts, heels, habits.”

“She loved, lost,” Parker wrote of her iconic character. “Aged, got wiser. … Changed homes, time zones, boyfriends, her mind, her shoes, her hair, but never her love and devotion to New York City.”

“Carrie Bradshaw has dominated my professional heartbeat for 27 years,” Parker added. “I think I have loved her most of all.”

“[Showrunner Michael Patrick King] and I together recognized, as we have in the past, this chapter complete,” she wrote. “AJLT was all joy, adventure, the greatest kind of hard work alongside the most extraordinary talent of 380 that includes all the brilliant actors who joined us. I am better for every single day I spent with you. It will be forever before I forget. The whole thing. Thank you all.”

Sarah Jessica Parker Originally Said Goodbye in 2004

Parker made her debut as newspaper columnist Carrie Bradshaw in 1998. The series followed the lives and loves of her character’s New York City friend group until 2004, when Bradshaw rode off into the sunset with her longtime love, Mr. Big (Noth).

When the series ended, Parker told Oprah’s O Magazine what a “hard decision it was to end the show.”

“But I don’t want to crawl across the finish line with bloodied hands,” she explained. “And as scary as it is to leave—and as lucrative as it would be to stay—sometimes you have to do what’s risky.”

But four years later, the four leads reunited for a self-titled feature film. In 2010, a second film, “Sex and the City 2”  was released. And that seemed to be the end of the franchise. Until…

After an 11-year gap, Parker, Davis, and Nixon reprised their roles for the HBO spinoff “And Just Like That” in 2021. The series added several new characters and reunited Parker’s character with a past love (Corbett).

In a statement posted on Instagram on August 1, 2025, showrunner Michael Patrick King announced,  “And Just Like That…. the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end.”

“While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That... season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop,” he added. “Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12.”

King added that he and Parker waited until the third season of AJLT was almost finished airing before making the announcement because they “didn’t want the world ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season.”
