Robert De Niro Holds Hands With Girlfriend in Rare Appearance Ahead of Cannes Honor

While Robert De Niro has made it clear how much he enjoys becoming a father again to 2-year-old Gia, whom he shares with girlfriend Tiffany Chen, even the most dedicated parents need a date night. While some couples go to the movies, dinner, or a concert, De Niro and Chen’s rare night out is not only in the “City of Film,” but at one of the most renowned film festivals in the world: Cannes.

Chen Joined Him on the Cannes Festival Red Carpet

The couple, rarely photographed together, held hands and posed for pictures during De Niro’s photocall. De Niro looked comfortable and casual in a gray polo shirt, brown pants, and a dark gray suit jacket. Conversely, Chen looked effortlessly lovely in a strapless white dress with stripes and a thin black belt. She accessorized with white ballet flats, a white sweater, and a beige handbag.

For the 78th year of the Cannes Festival, the actor was honored with a “Lifetime Achievement” Honorary Palme d’Or for his “indelible mark on cinephilia.”

The couple walked the red carpet during the Opening Ceremony, before Leonardo DiCaprio presented De Niro with the award. It was an emotional moment for De Niro, who visibly had tears as he hugged his “Killers of the Flower Moon” costar.

De Niro looked polished in a tuxedo and black bow tie, while Chen looked elegant in a black gown with a fitted sequined bustier and lace and tulle skirt.

“I have such close feelings for Festival de Cannes…” De Niro said in a Cannes Festival press release. “Especially now when there’s so much in the world pulling us apart, Cannes brings us together — storytellers, filmmakers, fans, and friends. It’s like coming home.”

While most of the focus was on De Niro and Chen, the two didn’t come to Cannes alone. Helen, De Niro’s 13-year-old daughter with ex-wife Grace Hightower, walked the red carpet with the couple. Her father held her hand tightly as the young teenager smiled for the cameras. Dressed in a simple, sleeveless black gown, she wore black flats and carried a tiny black purse.

De Niro and Helen are close, and director Tony Goldwyn got a first-hand look at their relationship while filming “Ezra” with De Niro in 2022. “She was around a lot,” Goldwyn told People. “It was really beautiful to see how Bob is with her. She was, I guess, 10 or 11 when we filmed, so now she’s 12 or 13. But they have the most dear relationship.”
