Prince Harry Shares Videos of Princess Diana with Son

Prince Harry is sharing a touching story of how he’s shown his five-year-old son Archie videos of his mother, Princess Diana, walking through minefields.

The steps the Princess took in Angola just months before her death in 1997 have been retraced by son Harry as he picks up her work where she left off.

On-going Invictus Games Raise Issue of Landmines

Prince Harry and wife Meghan Markle are in Canada right now for Invictus Games. There during an interview with Canadian television channel CTV, the prince revealed that he had shown the videos to Archie.

At a wheelchair basketball game, he told CTV, “It’s hard because kids don’t always ask the right questions. So you either shut it down right away, which I will never do, or you engage in the conversation and try to explain things. Archie was asking about landmines so I was talking about how some of these guys were blown up.”

Delicate Subject Gives Prince a Chance to Talk About His Mom

In the interview, the 40-year-old Duke of Sussex said, “I think IEDs [Improvised explosive devices] are probably a little much at this point. But I found myself talking to him about mines when he was five years old. Interestingly, it gave me a chance to talk about my mum, his grandma, which I didn’t even really consider. So that became the outcome of the story for him. He wanted to see videos and photographs of his grandma Diana out doing her thing for landmines all those years ago. It produced a very interesting conversation between me and him, different to what I thought it would be.”

Minefield Where Princess Diana Walked is Now a Thriving Suburb

38-years after Princess Diana walked that minefield, the impact of her efforts is still being felt. The Halo Trust charity that Diana worked with, and that Prince Harry continues to work with, says the minefield “is now a thriving suburb in the city of Huambo, and a nearby school that was once surrounded by mines has been cleared, so children are able to attend lessons safely.”

Harry and Meghan’s Kids Stay Behind for Invictus Trip

Archie and his three-year-old sister Lilibet did not accompany the Duke and Duchess to Canada for the Invictus Games.

The sports competition was founded by the Duke in 2014. It aims to inspire wounded service members and veterans to strive for recovery through competition and adventure.

On her new Instagram page, Meghan Markle posted a video with the caption “Let the games begin!
Get ready for a week of heart, hope, and heroes in action. Join us in cheering loudly and proudly to show just how much these competitors and their families mean to us.”

How to Watch the Invictus Games

The Invictus Games Vancouver Whistler 2025 will feature more than 500 competitors from 23 nations. They will compete in adaptive sports ranging from wheelchair rugby to alpine skiing through Sunday, February 16, 2025.

ESPN is the U.S. broadcast partner for the 2025 Invictus Games.
