‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5: Premiere Date, Plot & Guest Stars

Another mystery is about to unfold at the Arconia. Hulu’s hit murder-mystery comedy “Only Murders in the Building” returns for season 5 on September 9, and it promises a fresh investigation, new high-profile guest stars, and the return of some beloved characters—including one big name fans weren’t sure would be back. ‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5 Will Investigate a Familiar Face’s Murder

At the end of “Only Murders in the Building” season 4, longtime Arconia doorman Lester (played by Teddy Coluca) was found dead in the building’s iconic courtyard fountain. Now, in season 5, Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) are back on the case—this time investigating a murder that hits painfully close to home.

Lester has appeared throughout the series in various roles, but this time, his death becomes the central mystery. According to co-creator John Hoffman, season 5 will explore the contrast between “past New York and present New York,” according to Deadline.

The season kicks off with three episodes on September 9, followed by weekly releases on Hulu.

Meryl Streep Is Back, and She’s Not Alone

One of the biggest questions fans had after season 4’s finale was whether Meryl Streep would return as Loretta Durkin. In an adorable video posted by the “Only Murders” social accounts, Streep and Gomez confirmed her return by recreating a classic scene from “The Devil Wears Prada”—and the internet went wild.

“Well I think that depends on…” Streep begins before Gomez cuts her off with, “No, no, no. That wasn’t a question.”

Loretta, now married to Oliver and pursuing an acting career, will remain a key player in season 5. Also expected to return are Michael Cyril Creighton as Howard, Jackie Hoffman as Uma, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph as Detective Williams.

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Season 5 is Packed With Major Guest Stars

Season 5 is also stacking its guest cast with serious talent. Oscar winners Renée Zellweger and Christoph Waltz along with A-listers Keegan-Michael Key, Logan Lerman, Beanie Feldstein, and Jermaine Fowler will all appear. Tea Leoni is stepping into a more central role as Sofia, the wife of a missing man with ties to Brooklyn’s dry-cleaning crime syndicate.

“I think she’s the great tease at the end of the finale and a little bit of an intriguing bump forward,” Hoffman told Deadline. “She’s an extension of the little news report in Episode 9 that Mabel makes note of at the hospital. [Sofia] is the wife of the Dry Cleaning King of Brooklyn, and maybe a couple of dry cleaning outlets in Manhattan, as well, we may come to know.”
