Why Kyle MacLachlan Turned Down an Offer to Appear on ‘And Just Like That’

Kyle MacLachlan was offered the chance to reprise his role as Trey MacDougal on the “Sex and the City” spinoff “And Just Like That,” but he declined. 

MacLachlan shared with Us Weekly that the idea he was pitched wasn’t what he’d had in mind. “… what they suggested to me, I said, ‘I think there should be more,’” he revealed. “So I just said, ‘I wonder, if the relationship that Charlotte and Trey had demands a little more than their first idea.’”

However, the actor did seem tempted by the prospect of reuniting with his “SATC” castmates. “Listen, I would love to come back and have fun,” MacLachlan said.

Kristin Davis Wanted MacLachlan to Return

On an episode of Kristin Davis’ podcast, “Are You a Charlotte?” she revealed that of all Charlotte’s love interests on “SATC” she thought Trey was her best match (aside from Harry, of course). She clarified, “… it’s really hard to separate my own feelings from Charlotte’s experience,” adding, “I loved working with Kyle MacLachlan so incredibly much.”

Davis also said she was disappointed that MacLachlan wouldn’t be returning for the spinoff and gave him “a hard time” about it when she ran into him. “Kyle and I had to talk about it because I was kinda mad at him,” she shared. “I said, ‘Why didn’t you come on? We wanted you to come on!’”

Davis recalled that MacLachlan told her he declined the offer because the writers of “And Just Like That” had Trey and Charlotte’s story ending in a bittersweet way. “I think he just didn’t want there to be kind of a sad note to the end,” David explained. “So, I get that.”

In terms of what Trey MacDougal would be doing these days, MacLachlan had come up with an idea of his own. “It’d be very interesting,” he said. “I had suggested that Trey has maybe moved to Napa and has a very successful winery and label there — you can see where I’m going with this,” the actor told Us Weekly. 

It’s unclear whether he actually pitched the idea, as he added, “But no, I actually haven’t said anything yet.”

But while he may not be reprising his role, MacLachlan had nothing but nice things to say about the show and his former co-stars. “The show’s doing great,” he said. “They’re all lovely. And I adore them.”
