Kate Hudson Weighs In On ‘How to Lose a Guy In 10 Days’ Sequel

More than two decades after the success of “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” solidified Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson’s status as rom-com royalty, the topic of a sequel is once again making waves. Hudson reveals that she isn’t saying no, but many factors would have to happen before she said yes.

“The thing is, it would just have to be totally right,” Hudson told E! News in a joint interview with Mindy Kaling. When chatting with the BBC a week ago, she said something similar, elaborating on why a good script is important before agreeing to a sequel. “You don’t want to break what’s not broken. And so, it would have to be all the right moving parts. But, I always love working with Matthew [McConaughey],” she added.

The feeling is mutual for McConaughey, who has also talked about how much fun they had making the film. “Possibly,” he answered when E! News asked about a sequel in 2020. “I mean, “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” is teed up, you know, teed up for one that you could easily do a sequel. And that was a really good one. As far as romantic comedies go, that was a really good one.”

A Viral TikTok Trend Introduced the Film to a New Audience

In December 2022, Netflix announced that “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” was one of the movies that would leave the streaming site. In response, people began posting TikTok videos about the movie, with one of the most popular edits featuring Andie (Hudson) singing “You’re So Vain” to Ben (McConaughey), but switching the line “All the girls dreamed that they’d be your partner” to “…they’d be Ben’s partner.”

“My son told me about this!” Hudson exclaimed on the Today Show that she’d ad-libbed that line. “I love that that movie lives on with younger girls. And on this movie in particular with the press, so many young — now there’s a new generation of journalists who would say ‘Andie Anderson made me want to be a journalist,’ I’m like, ‘what?'”

Hudson thinks the film’s current popularity with young women is simple.”There was a very feminist twist to that movie, and it really inspired young girls, and that made me so happy.”

Whether or not someone creates a fantastic script that McConaughey and Hudson love, she has a pretty good idea what Andie is like now. “Definitely she still has great outfits, number one. She still loves dresses and Isadora diamonds.” When asked if she thought the couple were still together, Kaling had her doubts. “I don’t think it’s smooth sailing with her and Matthew’s character because they’re wild by nature,” she said.
