Josh Brolin Opens Up About the ‘Goonies’ Sequel

Josh Brolin is currently promoting his new movie, “Weapons.” However, there are high hopes among his fan base for a sequel to the 1985 hit “The Goonies.” There have been talks of a new version for quite some time, and now he’s opening up about his thoughts on the matter.

In addition to Josh Brolin, “The Goonies” starred Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, and Ke Huy Quan. Richard Donner served as the director of the iconic film.

Josh Brolin Hasn’t Ruled Out a Sequel to ‘The Goonies’ Movie, But the ‘Weapons’ Star Has Doubts

Josh Brolin recently interviewed with PEOPLE while promoting “Weapons.” During the conversation, he was asked about the possibility of a sequel to “The Goonies.” The beloved actor said, “Of course you hope it [happens] — I hope it does, because the experience was so great [and] the movie is received so well generation after generation.”

He continued, “Everything good about it.” Still, he has “trepidation” about doing a new version. In a nutshell, he doesn’t wait to “taint” the original version by doing something new with the story. Josh Brolin went on, “I don’t want to taint my memory of it.”

The “Weapons” actor added, “I don’t know! Maybe it could be great. If it’s great, you’ll know. Like, if [original story writer and co-producer Steven Spielberg] approves it, you know it’s gonna be good. But I think there’s been five scripts so far through the years, and he hasn’t approved anything yet.”

The “End Game” star then said, “So me being picky, Spielberg is picky — and he has a reason to be, ’cause he has great taste.” In other words, a new version of “The Goonies” may be a far shot. Still, it’s not easy to get sequels to beloved movies right, so maybe it’s for the best.

A Sequel Has Been In the Works For a While

As Josh Brolin mentioned in his interview, there have been scripts written for a “Goonies” sequel. Variety confirmed the news in February 2025 that Warner Bros. had hired Potsy Ponciroli to write the script.

The producers for the film include Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario. Notably, the original writer for the film, Chris Columbus, is also involved. At the time of initial reporting, there was no director attached.

So, it does seem possible that fans could see Josh Brolin and the rest of the cast back together for a new version of “The Goonies” if there is ever a good enough script. His upcoming movie, “Weapons,” opens in theaters on August 8.
