A new “Harry Potter” TV series is coming to HBO, and 12 cast members have officially been confirmed. After casting directors watched “tens of thousands of children” audition for the Golden Trio of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, we now know who will be taking on those beloved roles. Here’s a look at the entire cast of the latest adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books.
Dominic McLaughlin Stars as ‘Harry Potter’
A fresh-faced young actor named Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as Harry Potter in the HBO series, succeeding Daniel Radcliffe. Despite having zero released credits on IMDb, McLaughlin is slated to star in the upcoming comedy “Grow” alongside Golda Rosheuvel and Nick Frost.
Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley
Another young actor without prior acting credits, Alastair Stout has landed the role of Harry’s best friend at Hogwarts Ron Weasley. Stout and his red hair looks nearly identical to a young Rupert Grint, who originated the role in the movies.
Stage Actor Arabella Stanton Takes On Hermione Granger
Inheriting the role of one of Hogwarts’ smartest students, Hermione Granger, from Emma Watson is Arabella Stanton. She made her acting debut in London’s West End starring as Matilda in “Matilda: The Musical.”
John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore in the New ‘Harry Potter’ series
The Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was played by two actors in the “Harry Potter” film series: Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. In the new HBO series, the role of Albus Dumbledore, the powerful wizard and most senior professor, goes to acting legend John Lithgow.
Paapa Essiedu Stars as Severus Snape, Head of the Slytherin House
Paapa Essiedu has been cast as potions professor Severus Snape, a role originated by the late Alan Rickman. Essiedu is known for “I May Destroy You” and “The Outrun.” Snape was a childhood enemy of Harry’s dad, James, and loved his mom, Lily. He’s also an early adversary of Harry and his classmates.
Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
Taking over the role of Minerva McGonagall — the head of the Gryffindor House at Hogwarts — from the late Maggie Smith is Janet McTeer. Known for “Tumbleweeds” and “Albert Nobbs,” McTeer will play the transfiguration professor who is one of Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s earliest allies.
Nick Frost Will Play Rubeus Hagrid
Taking over the role of Hogwarts gamekeeper and half-giant Hagrid from the late Robbie Coltrane is Nick Frost. Appearing in films like “Shaun of the Dead” and “Paul,” Frost is also co-starring with McLaughlin in the upcoming comedy “Grow.”
More Stars of ‘Harry Potter’ confirmed
Paul Whitehouse has been cast as Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch, while the role of Quirinus Quirrell goes to Luke Thallon. Taking over the role of Draco Malfoy, which was originated by Tom Felton, is Lox Pratt.
