Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade have gone through their fair share of challenges as a couple over the years, and they recently revealed they quietly navigated a cancer diagnosis for Wade.
During an appearance on the February 27 episode of “The View,” Union shared a big family update about how Wade is doing, and it was great news.
Dwyane Wade Is Cancer Free
During “The View” episode, the topic of Wade’s cancer diagnosis was brought up, and Union briefly opened up about navigating the situation.
“He’s had the surgery and he’s cancer free,” Union revealed.
In reflecting on learning of Wade’s cancer diagnosis, she noted, “I think I was in such shock when he told me the diagnosis.”
Union admitted, “You hear cancer, you’re paralyzed. Because you think of the absolute worst case scenario.”
She shared that while she has many friends who have survived cancer, when it came to her husband, she did not immediately think of those friends. Rather, she initially thought of the worst case scenario, the idea she could lose her husband.
It took some time for Union and the rest of the family to adjust to the news of Wade’s cancer diagnosis, she admitted. Union noted he “Didn’t tell everybody, he didn’t tell our whole family. He really wanted this to be very under the radar.”
Luckily, Wade is doing well now after surgery and Union stated he is currently free of cancer. However, she acknowledged, “It was a challenge” to navigate the scary diagnosis.
Wade Said the Surgery Brought the Weakest Moment of His Life
Wade opened up about his diagnosis in January. During the January 30 episode of his podcast, “The Why With Dwyane Wade,” the retired NBA superstar revealed he had surgery on December 18, 2023 to have a tumor removed from his kidney.
He explained the surgeon removed 40% of one kidney that had the tumor in it, to ensure they got all of the cancer out.
“I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” Wade recalled. He continued, “That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life.”
Wade noted, “Fortunately for me, man, my family got in. They jumped in, and man, what I saw in the midst of that and me going through my illness, I saw my family who may not always talk, may not always agree…I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me.”
He added, “In that process of my weakness, I found strength in my family, in my friends, in my group.”
