Sometimes, what seems like a bad thing turns into something good. Take “Madame Web,” for example. The universally panned film and box office flop has seen its stars try to distance themselves from the flick as much as possible. But for its lead, Dakota Johnson, her Razzie-nominated performance in the film may have just won her access to an exclusive club that includes Sandra Bullock.
Dakota Johnson ‘Freaked Out’ When Sandra Bullock Called Her
While hanging out with Amy Poehler on her “Good Hang” podcast, Poehler relayed to Johnson a question from a fan who wanted to know what actor or actress she admired. Instead of answering the question, she launched into a story about Bullock.
“Recently, I actually exchanged text messages — well, I got a voice note — from Sandra Bullock,” Johnson said. “I don’t know if you know, but I won the Razzie for worst actress.”
Poehler congratulates her, and they chat about the Razzie; she then continues her story.
“Sandra Bullock sent me a voice note, being like, ‘I heard you are in the Razzie Club, we should have brunch, we should have, like, a monthly brunch,'” Johnson recalled. “Because I guess she won that, like, the year that she won the Oscar, as well.”
“But I freaked out getting this message from her!” she exclaimed. “Because… she’s so iconic to me as, like, a movie star. I was like, ‘Oh my god.’ It was just crazy.”
“Sandra Bullock said that she asked for the award, and like, picked it up,” Johnson added later in the conversation. “And then they called her and asked her to give it back because they only had one.”
Sandra Bullock Won a Razzie Award and an Oscar the Next Day
Bullock did take home the Oscar for “The Blindside” the day after she received the Razzie for “All About Steve.” And, as Johnson mentioned, she picked it up in person. She gave everyone there a DVD of “All About Steve” and promised to come back the following year on one condition: Everyone had to watch the movie and decide if it really was the worst performance.
“If you’re willing to watch it, and then I will come back next year — and I will give back the Razzie,” she told the crowd.
While it’s true that the Razzie is an award for the worst in films, Johnson’s recognition may be a good thing. An extraordinary number of actors have won both an Oscar and a Razzie, including Al Pacino, Halle Berry, and Ben Affleck. Some even publicly accept the award, such as Francis Ford Coppola, who won three Razzies this year for “Megalopolis.
