Chet Hanks celebrated his first-ever talk show invite on “The Drew Barrymore Show” with an iconic reenactment of Tom Cruise jumping on Oprah Winfrey’s sofa in 2005.
“This is my first time on a talk show ever and there’s something that I’ve always wanted to do,” he told Drew Barrymore in a TikTok shared on March 18.
After getting permission from Barrymore, Hanks told the audience that he needed them to cheer really loudly for him. “Or else I’m going to look stupid. Can I count on you?” he asked.
As Hanks counted to three, he stepped onto the sofa and waved his arms in the air, much like Cruise did years ago. Following the stunt, Barrymore gave him a high-five as the audience clapped.
“He let his intrusive thoughts win,” a fan wrote on the post with a laughing emoji. Another shared, “I knew what he was gonna do lolol.”
Hanks Got Serious About His Sobriety After His Couch Jump
After playing the jokester by jumping on the sofa during his appearance on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” Chet turned to the more serious subject of his sobriety, per Too Fab.
He revealed that he’s been more than three years sober and his parents, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, were instrumental in helping him.
“They’ve always been super supportive of me. And I don’t take it for granted. I’m really, really grateful for both my parents. I’m at the age where I’m just really grateful for them,” he told Barrymore.
Chet continued, “I really cherish the time that I have spent with them. They’ve stuck with me through thick and thin, and I really am so grateful for where I’m at. Where we’re all at, the things I’ve got going in my life. All the beautiful people in my life. My relationships. My loved ones.”
He also shared that his parents are also supportive of his acting career and revealed that they watched his series “Running Point” more than once. “I watched it again with them to see their reaction, and it was great,” Chet said.
Hanks Always Knew He Would Be an Actor
Coming from a family of actors, Hank always knew he would be in the industry. “My dad’s an actor. My older brother’s an actor. My mom. This was the family business so I [knew] that was something I would go into at some point,” he told Bustle in a March 10 interview.
After roles in “Shameless” and “Empire,” Hanks landed the role of basketball player Travis Bugg in “Running Point,” alongside Kate Hudson.
Hanks immediately connected with his character and said, “It was the character description: Travis is the white point guard. He’s covered in tattoos. He’s a wannabe rapper.”
He said to Bustle, “It’s been a long road getting here. It’s been blood, sweat, and tears, and I don’t take any of it for granted. Fortune favors the bold and I just want to keep doing it all.”
