“The Boys” star Erin Moriarty revealed she was diagnoses with Graves’ disease.
She took to Instagram Friday, June 13, to share her recent diagnosis with fans. In addition, she added a series of images which included selfies and screenshots of texts between herself and family.
“Autoimmune disease manifests differently in everybody/every body,” she began the lengthy post. “Your experience will be different from mine. My experience will be different from yours. Perhaps greatly, perhaps minutely.”
She added, “One thing I can say: if I hadn’t chalked it all up to stress and fatigue, I would’ve caught this sooner.”
Graves’ disease is described as an autoimmune disease which causes the thyroid to produce a surplus of the thyroid hormone, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
It is one of the most common causes if one has an overactive thyroid. Graves’ disease will speed up your metabolism. The use of treatment can help regulate thyroid hormone levels.
Moriarty Is Receiving Treatment
The 30-year-old said she has already been feeling better since starting treatment.
“A month ago, I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease. Within 24 hours of beginning treatment, I felt the light coming back on,” she wrote. “It’s been increasing in strength ever since.”
She urged the importance of getting checked if you are not feeling like yourself.
She added, “If yours is dimming, even slightly, go get checked. Don’t ‘suck it up’ and transcend suffering; you deserve to be comfy. [Expletive] hard enough as is.”
The Actress Shared Screenshots Describing How She Felt
Moriarty shared screenshots of text conversations in the post. In these images, she detailed how she was feeling to family members.
The first message she shared was to her mom and revealed how she was feeling at her worst.
“I really really need relief. I feel nauseated tonight. I feel so [expletive] and removed from who I am, I can’t live like this forever. Or that long,” she wrote.
The actress described that she didn’t even have a mere five seconds where she could feel normal.
“It’s not just fatugue – it’s an ineffable, system wide cry for help and I don’t know how long I can remain in this state,” she concluded.
In another message to her father that was presumably after she started receiving treatment, she expressed she already could see improvement.
“I already feel a world of a difference, primary thought (as of now): ‘damn, this is how I’m supposed to feel? I’ve been missing out!'” she concluded.
Moriarty plays the popular character of Starlight in the hit TV show.
