‘Spinal Tap’ Gears Up for One Last Gig in 2025 Mockumentary Sequel

After years of waiting (and enough delays to make even the most chaotic rock band look organized), “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” finally has a release date. The sequel to the 1984 cult classic “This Is Spinal Tap” is officially hitting theaters on September 12, 2025 giving fans plenty of time to dust off their leather pants and questionable hairdos.

The Band Is Back (For One Last Gig)

Director Rob Reiner is returning, not just behind the camera but also as Marty Di Bergi, the hapless documentarian chronicling the band’s latest misadventures. He told Deadline, “So happy to be working with the folks at Bleecker Street who are passionate about keeping Tap’s legacy alive and happy to give Marty DiBergi another shot at relevancy.”

And yes, the core trio is back –Michael McKean (David St. Hubbins), Christopher Guest (Nigel Tufnel), and Harry Shearer (Derek Smalls)– reuniting after 15 years apart. Why? Because of a contractual obligation, of course. (Very on-brand for these guys.)

The setup is classic “Spinal Tap”; the band is forced to get back together for one final concert, despite years of unresolved drama, questionable musical decisions, and the ever-present risk of spontaneous drummer combustion. Expect plenty of absurdity as they attempt to reclaim their former (fictional) glory.

And if that wasn’t enough, some serious music royalty is joining in. Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Garth Brooks are all set to make appearances (according to Deadline), which should be interesting given Spinal Tap’s history of things going spectacularly wrong. Will they be offering words of wisdom, or getting roped into the chaos? Either way, it’s bound to be legendary.

A Sequel Worth the Wait?

The original “This Is Spinal Tap” helped define the mockumentary genre and gave us some of the most quotable rock satire ever; “these amps go to 11,” anyone? So, expectations are high for this sequel to deliver the same level of ridiculousness.

New cast members include John Michael Higgins, Chris Addison, and Nina Conti, which should add some fresh comedic energy to the mix. And while “Spinal Tap II” was originally slated for a 2024 release, delays from the Hollywood strikes pushed it back; only making fans more eager to see if the band can still rock (or, more likely, fail spectacularly at it).

To help build hype, Bleecker Street is re-releasing the original “This Is Spinal Tap” in theaters this summer (per Forbes) for its 41st Anniversary, giving audiences a chance to revisit the film that started it all. Whether you’re a longtime fan or just discovering the brilliance of Spinal Tap, now’s the perfect time to catch up before the sequel takes the stage.

Mark your calendars, because come September 2025, “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” is going to crank it up once again… whether the band is ready or not.
