Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie” Almost Wasn’t Released

Topping charts and traveling across different countries has been Shakira’s timeless song “Hips Don’t Lie”.

However, in a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon, the Colombian singer shared the hit, now garnering over 2 billion streams on Spotify, almost didn’t make it on her “Oral Fixation, Vol. 2” album.

“I remember my album was already distributed and then this idea came up,” she told Fallon on May 8 during her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, “and Wyclef [Jean] and I met and we started working on this track.”

Shakira shared she had a dream with Jean. When she woke up, her manager told her Jean wanted to work with her.

“The albums were distributed, and this song came about,” Shakira said as she recounted the collaboration with Jean. “I started working with Wyclef, and I knew I had a hit, so I called Donny Ienner who was in charge at the time of the company, and I said, ‘Donny, you have to pick up the albums from the stores’. He’s like ‘No way. This album is already out there.’ I’m like, ‘You gotta believe me, you gotta trust me. You do that, we have a hit.’and he said, ‘Okay, so I’ll listen to you. I’ll listen to you on this one,’ and he did it. We kind of had to repackage the albums… . It changed my story.”

Despite the song’s two-decades run of rumbling from speakers around the globe, fans continue to resonate with the song’s catchy lyrics and electric rhythm.

In celebration of the song’s anniversary, Shakira and Jean shared the stage as they performed the track at the Tonight Show on May 6.

Fans took on the video’s comments section to show their support.

“Shakira’s performance of ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ never gets old!,” one fan wrote, “20 years later, she still brings the same fire and passion to the stage. Incredible!”

Another fan commented “That song was released 20 years ago and they performed like it was yesterday, she’s ageless.”

Others shared the sense of nostalgia they felt seeing and hearing the artists perform.

“I can’t believe this song is already 20 years old!,” one person commented. “Seems like just yesterday I was a junior in high school being introduced to this song. Still packing the same energy now as it did then.”
