Nick Lachey Shares Emotional Reason He Cried When ‘Newlyweds’ Wrapped

No one was more surprised than Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson when MTV’s “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica” became a hit. Reality TV was still in its infancy: there was no “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” or “Real Housewives” yet.

“I think the only one that had come out before that was “The Osbornes,” Lachey told Vivian Wu on the “Richer Lives” podcast.

“Newlyweds” was created as a way to promote both Simpson’s and his albums. But what was supposed to be six episodes turned into three seasons. Nonetheless, Lachey found himself very emotional when the show wrapped. Most would assume it had to do with the end of his marriage to Simpson. But the reason actually had to do with his relationship with the crew.

Nick Lachey Opens Up About His Close Relationship With ‘Newlyweds’ Crew

While talking with Wu, Lachey tried to explain what it was like having camera crews “just watching you exist.”

“You get very used to it, surprisingly,” he admitted. However, at first, they were instructed to disregard the filmmakers.

“I said, ‘Guys, if this is ever going to work, that’s just not how I’m wired.’ You know what I mean?” Lachey said. “Like, you’re not going to be in my house, and you know, basically watch my every move, and we’re not going to talk to each other. We’ve got to get past that right now.”

“So, I actually came to really love the crew,” the “Love is Blind” host said. “I mean, I remember crying the day we shut down, because you develop relationships with them. They really became family.”

Nick Lachey Reveals How ‘Newlyweds’ Changed His Career Forever

While “Newlyweds” introduced the world to him and Simpson, the show did something else that Lachey wasn’t expecting. “What reality TV did for me was allow me to introduce myself as Nick Lachey — the person — to the world,” he said. “And even guys were like, ‘Oh man, he’s kind of cool, I can have a beer with that guy.'”

“It opened up a different world for me as an entertainer, because no one ever got to see that side of me before,” he continued. “It was just ‘Nick in this boy band.’ So it allowed me to, I think, become very comfortable being myself, which has served me well as a host.”

Lachey has no problem admitting that he “can’t act to save my life,” but hosting reality shows, such as “Love is Blind,” has served him well. “I feel very comfortable being myself, which is what, you know, which is what reality TV is all about.”
