John Lennon and Yoko Ono had an incredibly high-profile relationship, and for some, they were the perfect example of true love (although they undoubtedly had their highs and their lows). Their love story began in 1966, after meeting at Ono’s art exhibit in London, England. At the time, Lennon was still married to his first wife, Cynthia Lennon.

Lennon and Ono’s story would span across 14 years, before Lennon’s untimely death, and one of the most memorable events in their coupling was their wedding day in Gibraltar on March 20, 1969.

Photos from Lennon and Ono’s wedding show them both dressed in white as they board a private jet in Gibraltar. Ono is wearing a white mini dress and knee-high white boots. She wore her hair long and loose, accessorizing with an oversized white hat and sunglasses.

Lennon wore a white blazer and what appears to be a turtleneck. For a more casual finish, he paired it with loose-fitted off-white pants and white sneakers.

Lennon explained why he was not wearing a suit in an interview with Rolling Stone in 1971. “Gibraltar was like a little sunny dream. I couldn’t find a white suit — I had sort of off-white corduroy trousers and a white jacket. Yoko had all white on,” he said.

In the photos, Lennon can be seen proudly showing off his marriage license, a moment that brought him and Ono great joy!

It was not a wedding attended by hundreds of guests or a multi-day celebration; instead, it was quick, private, and romantic. “It was very romantic. It’s all in the song, ‘The Ballad of John and Yoko,’ if you want to know how it happened, it’s in there,” Lennon said.

Lennon had divorced his first wife in November 1968, People reports. The former couple met in art school and married in 1962.

John Lennon Describes His Love for Yoko Ono

Lennon and Ono endured several heartaches during their coupling but found their way back to each other. Their relationship was also heavily scrutinized, and many people blamed Ono as the reason that The Beatles broke up.

Lennon discussed the negativity toward Ono in an interview with Playboy in August 1980, People reports. His comments gave a glimpse into his deep love for his wife. “When you’re in love, when somebody says something like, ‘How can you be with that woman?’ you say, ‘What do you mean? I am with this goddess of love, the fulfillment of my whole life. Why are you saying this?'” he said. “Our love helped us survive it …”
