Jennifer Lopez Pays Tribute To Iconic Versace Dress As Donatella Versace Steps Down As Brand’s Chief Creative Director: ‘Gianni Would Be So Proud’

On March 13, Donatella Versace announced she’s stepping down as the House of Versace‘s chief creative director after 30 years, according to Us Weekly. She will transition into a new role as chief brand ambassador. Her successor is Dario Vitale, who previously worked as Miu Miu’s design and image director.

As an abundance of heartfelt tributes and well wishes pour in across social media, Jennifer Lopez chimed in to pay tribute to her dear friend in a sweet Instagram post.

“Gianni would be so proud,” Lopez’s caption read. “What a journey you have been on. You are strong, resilient, powerful, talented and I am so happy that I have gotten to know you over the years.”

She added, “Together, our journey and the friendship that we have formed has been incredible. I know this next chapter will be filled with love, happiness and friendship…and whatever you want to create it to be. I am always here for you.”

No one can forget the night at the 2000 Grammys when Lopez — who was still somewhat of a newcomer in the entertainment industry — showed up rocking a green Versace dress. But it wasn’t just any green Versace dress! It was jungle-print, silk chiffon dress with a plunging neckline that hit just below her navel. The jaw-dropping moment broke the internet as it was deemed risque at the time. It simultaneously put Donatella Versace on the map after the tragic death of her older brother Gianni Versace in 1997. It also sparked a lifelong friendship between her and JLo.

Jennifer Lopez Has Remixed The Versace Dress Many Times Over The Years

In JLo’s “I Luh Ya Papi” music video from 2014, she showed love to Versace by rocking a green jumpsuit featuring the same iconic jungle print. Then, in 2020, a 50-year-old Lopez made a surprise appearance at Versace’s spring 2020 show, according to WWD. She stunned the crowd as she glided down the catwalk in a reimagined version of the dress.

Jennifer Lopez’s Versace Dress Led To The Creation Of Google Images

These days, it’s so easy to take Google Images for granted, but did you know that JLo’s Versace dress is the reason why Google Images actually exists today?

“I found out that because of that night and because of that dress, Google Images was actually created,” Lopez said in a YouTube clip in April 2020. “That so many people went searching for this and they had nowhere to search a picture at that time on the Internet, they created Google Images.”

Talk about iconic!
