Ellen Pompeo and Taylor Swift have a very interesting connection.
Pompeo joined Jennifer Hudson on her show to talk about “Grey’s Anatomy” being on the air for 20 years as well as her new show on Hulu, “Good American Family.” The two then discussed how to nab cool points with their teenage kids.
But the coolest thing you can do is hook up with the biggest music star of the 21st century.
Earning Cool Points
“I have a 15 year old son and it’s hard to get cool points,” Hudson admits to Pompeo after the two discuss Pompeo seeing Pricilla Preseley at the Emmys. “How do you get cool points from your kids?”
“I don’t think I do,” Pompeo tells her to audience laughter.
That is until the actress remembers that Coachella tickets, specifically anything involving rapper Tyler The Creator, can apparently give her an in with her daughter. Additionally, Pompeo says she’s on Hailey Bieber’s gift list where she can get free makeup.
Hudson says her son is into basketball so the only way he can think she’s cool is by getting into basketball games.
“What I’m not allowed to do is get out of the car while I’m dropping him off at school,” Hudson says. “Because he’ll say ‘Mama, you’re embarrassing me.’”
Not so Much Bad Blood
“You had to get cool points for this,” Hudson insists as she changes the topic. “Ten years ago, you were in a Taylor Swift video.”
“That got me so much mileage!” Pompeo agrees.
The music video in question is “Bad Blood” off of the “1989” album.
Pompeo says Swift is a good person and that the two didn’t know each other but the musician invited the actress to be in the video. While on set for the short amount of time that she was there, Pompeo took the opportunity to ask Swift for charity aid with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.
“They have an amazing program at Children’s where they make music for the babies in the NICU,” Pompeo tells Hudson. “For the parents who have to go to work all day and they can’t be with the kids, they record their voices singing nursery rhymes or telling them stories and they play it for the babies in the day when the parents can’t be there. The babies respond to it. It increases their outcomes. It makes their outcomes more positive.”
“It’s a really nice program,” she adds. “But they need money to run it.”
With her limited time, Pompeo stood tall.
“I got up the chutzpah and asked Taylor, ‘Could you write me a big old check for Children’s?’” Pompeo continues. “She knew me all but 20 minutes and that girl wrote me the biggest check without blinking an eye.”
Other stars who appear in the music video include Selena Gomez, Ellie Goulding, and Jessica Alba among others – each playing members of Swift’s “squad.”
