Demi Lovato Returns to Her Dance-Pop Roots with New Single ‘Fast’

Demi Lovato is back, and she’s ready to dance! After declaring a dramatic farewell to her pop sound with a literal “funeral” in 2022, the 32-year-old powerhouse is spinning the turntables in the opposite direction. Her new single, “Fast,” which she has been teasing for a while now, is said to bring back an unapologetic return to the genre that made her a global chart-topper.

“My pop music coming back to life after we had a funeral for it,” Lovato captioned a cheeky TikTok earlier this month, set to a pulse-pounding club beat. Cue the resurrection!

And it’s not just a sonic pivot. It’s a whole new Lovato, said to be lighter, freer, newly married, and completely in control. We’re here for this new sound, indeed!

Demi Lovato Is Reclaiming Her Pop Era

For those keeping score, Lovato isn’t new to reinvention. From her breakout Disney Channel days and early albums like “Don’t Forget” and “Here We Go Again” to the raw vulnerability of “Confident,” “Tell Me You Love Me,” and her gritty, rock-heavy 2022 release “Holy Fvck,” she’s proven she can shapeshift without losing her core.

But her latest evolution feels like a full-circle moment. We’ve seen her change right before our eyes after she decided to change her life for the better after her tragic overdose back in 2018. The singer suffered three strokes and a heart attack after a night out. According to doctors, she had been just a few minutes away from death. “My doctors said that I had five to 10 more minutes,” the singer said in her documentary “Dancing With The Devil,” recalling the event.

The upcoming album, casually dubbed “DL9” by fans, has been described as a “letting go” experience. It’s executive produced by Zhone, who has also worked with big pop names including Kesha, Troye Sivan, and Kylie Minogue. The music mogul went on to promise euphoric, house-infused beats that are built for summer nights and sweaty dance floors.

“It’s been so inspiring working with Demi and experiencing her journey of continued leveling up,” Zhone told Rolling Stone. “She is such a master in the studio. This album is about letting inhibitions go. We had so much fun making this music!”

New Music, New Marriage, New Era

In the last few years, we’ve seen Lovato fighting to reclaim her identity. And well, safe to say that 2025 seems to be embracing it. In May, she married musician Jordan “Jutes” Lutes in an intimate ceremony that marked a major turning point. Yes, both personally and professionally. Before that, she was linked to Wilmer Valderrama, whom she met when she was only 17 and he was 29. The two dated on and off for around six years before ending their relationship in 2016. But this time around, Lovato revealed she knew what love was, which has helped her become the person she is today.

Lovato told The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last fall that love had changed the way she writes music. “I’ve been writing just nothing but, like, love songs and sexy songs, ’cause I’m just in this, like, really good place,” she said.

new era has arrived. FAST OUT FRIDAY 8.1 ⏩

That energy oozes through every lyric of “Fast,” which she teased across multiple TikToks. Over a driving bass and glossy synths,” Lovato can be heard singing. “‘Cause baby honestly / I just wanna feel your hands all over me / Even if it’s only for tonight.” Later, she declares, “I wanna go fast / I wanna go hard / I wanna go anywhere you are.”

Is it hot in here, or is that just Lovato turning the BPM up?

Let’s face it, it wouldn’t be a complete Lovato comeback without some curveballs. Lovato has always lived outside the box; whether she’s singing her lungs out on a major stage, dropping a successful Hulu documentary, or reshaping pop on her own terms, she’s not here to follow a script.

She’s here to rewrite it with glitter, grit, and a whole lot of bass. We’re here for this comeback and can’t wait to see what she brings to the table!

Keep your ears, and probably eyes, out for “Fast,” coming on Friday, August 1st.
