Bon Iver on Working With Taylor Swift: ‘Out of Body’ Moment & Their Musical Bond

It’s been a few years since he sang with Taylor Swift but Bon Iver remembers it like it was yesterday.

The indie pop singer – who goes by Justin Vernon – stopped by “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” to promote his band’s new album, “Sable, Fable.” The two also talk about Vernon’s Taylor Swift connection.

But, before Vernon and host Fallon spoke about Swift, they hit a few topics along the way including Vernon’s love of the WNBA, working with Charli XCX, and getting a musical blessing from Bonnie Raitt.

Powerful and Amazing

Vernon, Fallon reveals, has a studio called April Base in Wisconsin near Eau Claire where musicians are invited to work. Among the artists that have been by are Swift herself.

“She just played [your song] on the Eras Tour,” Fallon says. “All these kids are screaming your song. How does that make you feel?”

“Out of body,” Vernon says. “Sadly, I didn’t ever get to sing it with her on her tour. She got to come sing it with us. But I saw those clips and I’m like ‘Gosh, they sound better than one of me can sound.”

“…It was pretty powerful to just see that,” Vernon adds. “And to hear how that sounded, it was amazing.”

I Think I’ve Seen This Film Before

Vernon was previously featured on the Swift song “Exile,” which can be found on 2020’s “folklore.”

While, as Vernon mentioned, he didn’t get a chance to perform the song with her during the Eras Tour, she did manage to make a surprise appearance at his 2022 London show.

The National’s Aaron Dessner also joined too. Dessner is a frequent collaborator of Swift’s.

Vernon also makes an appearance on Charli XCX’s “Brat” remix album, “Brat and It’s Completely Different but Also Still Brat.” The song the two worked in collaboration on is “I Think About It All The Time” and features a sampling of Bonnie Raitt’s “Nick Of Time.”

Funnily enough, the sample idea was suggested by Haim singer Danielle Haim, Vernon says.

“My friend Danielle Haim told me ‘You should sample ‘Nick Of Time’ – the old Bonnie Raitt song,” Vernon remembers. “I was like: ‘That’s such a good idea!’ Because Charli’s song was about running out of time.”

Vernon would call Rait who answered an easy yes.

“Sable, Fable” will be released on April 11 and feature Dijon, Flock of Dimes and Danielle Haim. This will be the band’s fifth studio album.
