Is Britney Spears Performing at the 2025 VMAs?

Britney Spears will not be part of this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, despite rumors that she was lined up as a surprise performer.

According to sources cited by TMZ, the 43-year-old pop icon won’t be performing at the event, which will take place on September 7 at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.

Fans have been looking forward to the 2025 VMAs after several Britney fan accounts teased a possible comeback performance. Some even claimed the singer will perform a “10-minute medley” of her greatest hits.

However, the outlet confirmed that no such plans exist and that Britney was never approached by the awards show to perform. It would’ve marked her first VMAs performance since 2016, when she sang “Make Me” and joined G-Eazy for “Me, Myself, & I.”

Fans have been anticipating Britney Spears’ comeback.

Over on X (formerly Twitter), fans have mixed reactions to Britney and her rumored VMAs performance. While some were not surprised that it’s not happening, others were still hopeful for a comeback.

One fan wrote: “She did say she was done with the music industry. She’s worked very hard and suffered a lot at the hands of the industry. She deserves to just enjoy life.”

Another tweeted: “Britney told y’all she’ll never come back to the music business, and I believe her. Let her enjoy her time in peace.”

A fan added: “How many times does she have to tell y’all that she is DONE with the music industry?!”

Meanwhile, a hopeful fan wrote: “This would be a dream come true, but we all know that this ain’t happening.”

Another chimed in: “As much as I would love for this to be true, I just don’t see it happening. At least not anytime soon.”

A fan also quipped: “Britney too iconic for VMAs. She’s gonna ditch them,” while another exclaimed: “WE ARE SO BRITNEY STARVED!”

A Look Back into Britney Spears’ VMAs Performances

Britney made her MTV Video Music Awards debut in 1999. At the time, the teen queen performed her smash hit “Baby One More Time.”

The singer made waves at the 2000 VMAs when she opened with a sexy rendition of the Rolling Stones’ “Satisfaction,” before ripping off her black suit to reveal the now-iconic nude two-piece for “Oops!… I Did It Again.”

In 2001, Britney delivered one of her most unforgettable performances at the MTV VMAs, dominating the stage with “I’m a Slave 4 U” while a live yellow python was draped across her shoulders.

In 2003, Britney shocked the music world during the MTV VMA opener, performing alongside Christina Aguilera, Madonna, and Missy Elliott. She kicked off the performance with a “Like a Virgin” tribute to Madonna, culminating in an on-stage kiss with the pop icon.

After dealing with challenges in her personal and professional life, Britney returned to the VMA stage in 2007. However, her highly anticipated comeback performance of “Gimme More” was widely deemed lackluster.

Her last VMA appearance was in 2016, where she performed her new single at the time, “Make Me.”
