Is ‘F1’ Star Damson Idris the New Black Panther?

Damson Idris is currently making the media rounds to promote his new movie “F1.” But he keeps getting questions about a Marvel casting rumor that’s been swirling for the past few months, and he continues to play coy instead of giving a straight answer. Is it true that Idris will replace the late Chadwick Boseman and become the new Black Panther?

Damson Idris Stars Alongside Brad Pitt in ‘F1’

Idris stars in the new Formula 1 racing movie “F1” as Joshua Pearce, a hotshot rookie who drives for Apex Grand Prix Team (APXGP). He becomes the main rival of Brad Pitt’s Sonny Hayes, and both actors drove the Formula 1 cars in scenes filmed on location in places like Abu Dhabi and the U.K. Idris described his first day on set as life-changing.

“I look to my left, it’s Brad Pitt. Look to my right, it’s Javier Bardem. I look at my hands, they’re shaking,” he told Vanity Fair. “I was in the car for 45 minutes today. It sounds normal, but it’s not. It’s very hot out here. You’re strapped in, sweating through the helmet. You lose so much weight.”

Everyone Wants to Know if He Will Be the New Black Panther

As Marvel prepares for the next “Black Panther” film, there have been rumors that three actors allegedly turned down the role of Prince T’Challa. Idris’ name is on that short list, along with David Oyelowo and John Boyega.

During a recent interview on The Today Show, Idris was asked if it was true that he was in talks to be the next Black Panther. With a smile, he quickly replied “yes, no.” The interviewer followed up by asking “if they ask, would you say yes?” HIs response was simply “yes.”

Idris seemed to be having fun with the rumor, while implying that he had not been offered the role so he never had the opportunity to turn it down.

Damson Idris Trolls Fans on Social Media

Meanwhile on X, Idris responded to a fan who believed that he had turned down the Prince T’Challa role. The fan wrote in a post that “@DamsonIdris purportedly turned down the role of Black Panther. He would have been perfect for it too. Oh well.”

In a witty response Idris wrote, “Yes sir. I turned down 007, a co-lead film with Daniel Day-Lewis and an Eddie Murphy biopic too [upside down smiley emoji.”

Some fans didn’t pick up on the sarcasm, though, prompting others to respond.

“Sarcasm doesn’t come across well on social media, but this is (expletive) hilarious loooooool,” one user wrote. Another joked, “I heard you turned down Bad Boys 5 too.”

This isn’t the first time that Idris has mentioned an Eddie Murphy biopic. Back in 2022, he told “Good Morning America” that he would “love to play Eddie Murphy” because he grew up watching “RAW” and “Delirious.”

“His story is remarkable,” Idris said.

“F1” hits theaters on June 25th.
