‘The Traitors’ Host Alan Cumming Teases Return as Nightcrawler in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’

Peacock’s Mafia-style reality competition series, “The Traitors,” recently celebrated five Primetime Emmy nominations, including a nomination for Best Reality Competition Program. The show’s host, actor Alan Cumming, similarly recieved a nod from the Academy last month when he was nominated in the Best Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program category.

Now, Cumming, who won the title of Best Host in 2024, is hot on the campaign trail, preparing for the 77th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards on September 15, 2025. The star, 60, is similarly gearing up for the release of “The Traitors” Season 4, set to begin streaming on Peacock later this year.

Alan Cumming Calls Return to Nightcrawler Role a ‘Healing’ Experience

Outside of his reality TV duties, Cumming is similarly set to appear in the upcoming Marvel Studios blockbuster “Avengers: Doomsday,” reprising his role as X-Men mutant Nightcrawler.

In an August 19 interview with Gold Derby, Cumming opened up about his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as well as teasing what fans can expect from the forthcoming season of “The Traitors.”

Considering that Cumming’s Nightcrawler made his debut more than 20 years ago in 2003’s “X2: X-Men United,” it’s no surprise that the “Spy Kids” actor admitted he doesn’t have a clear picture of exactly what’s going to happen in “Doomsday.”

“I did the entire film in isolation,” revealed Cumming. “Lots of green screen, face replacements. They even gave characters fake names. I don’t know who I was acting with half the time.”

Cumming’s comments on “Doomsday” follow those he made at the Televerse 2025 conference shortly after finishing filming on the project.

“I just came back. It was amazing. I was actually really…in a sort of ooey, gooey way, it was really healing,” said Cumming, adding that “Doomsday” will be “a great film.”

Cumming Just One Name on the Star-Studded ‘Doomsday’ Cast

The highly-anticipated film, set to hit theaters in December 2026, will also see Cumming reunite with several of his former “X-Men” co-stars, including Patrick Stewart (Professor Xavier), Sir Ian McKellen (Magneto), Rebecca Romjin (Mystique) and James Marsden (Cyclops).

While Cumming previously opened up about his less-than-perfect experience on the set of “X2,” which included the actor spending “like four and a half to five hours” getting covered head to toe in blue makeup, he revealed that filming “Doomsday” was a much more positive experience.

“And especially, I’m 60 years old. I did not think I would be doing my own stunts, playing a superhero in my 60s. So that was really great,” Cumming added. “And everyone was really nice. And I got it done really quickly because I couldn’t go, because of ‘The Traitors,’ when most of my scenes were being shot. So I squashed them all togehter, and got a green screen and various things and little scenes of people here and there. But it was pretty stealthy.”

While the Emmy-nominated host has remained tight lipped when it comes to “Doomsday” spoilers, he did previously “break the internet” by hinting that his character may have a fight scene with Pedro Pescal’s Mister Fantastic. Cumming has since retracted the statement, telling Gold Derby: “Honestly, I might have got it wrong.”

Cumming will join the all-star cast alongside the likes of established Marvel actors like Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Paul Rudd, Sebastian Stan, Florence Pugh, Vanessa Kirby, and, of course, Robert Downey Jr. to name a few, though rumors suggest even more MCU names will be added to the list before “Avenger: Doomsday” hits the big screen next December.

Cumming Teases ‘The Traitors’ Season 4 as the ‘Best Thing Ever’

In the meantime, fans can catch Cumming on the latest season of “The Traitors.” Starring a cast composed of professional athletes, reality TV icons and a few surprise contestants, Cumming told GD, “Season 4 is very good.”

“I know you think it can’t get any better or more explosive, but there is a sequence in the middle of the series that is the best thing ever,” Cumming teased. “Honestly, I think it’s going to be legendary. It was electric. People were screaming. I can’t wait.”
