Khloé Kardashian is speaking out about her role as the primary caregiver to Amari Thompson, the 18-year-old brother of her ex, NBA player Tristan Thompson.
Understanding Amari Thompson’s Condition: What Led Khloé to Step In
During the July 30 episode of her podcast “Khloé in Wonder Land,” the 41-year-old reality star explained why she took on the responsibility of caring for Amari, who has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS), a rare form of epilepsy that severely limits his mobility and communication.
“For those who don’t know, Tristan has a younger brother who is 18 years old, and he is severely disabled. Amari has LGS, which is a form of epilepsy,” Kardashian said. “He can’t walk or talk. He’s never been able to talk.”
Following the sudden passing of Tristan and Amari’s mother, Andrea Thompson, in January 2023, Khloé stepped in to support the family. “Andrea was the sole caretaker for Amari,” she shared. “After her death, we — me, Tristan, my whole family — took Amari back with us to the States.”
Why Amari Lives With Khloé in Los Angeles
Due to Tristan’s demanding travel schedule with the NBA, Kardashian said it made more sense for Amari to remain in Los Angeles.
“Tristan is in a different state literally every other day,” she said. “Amari has a handful of seizures a day with the type of epilepsy that he has. It’s not good that he travels, so Amari stays in LA with me, and I have chosen to take care of him and be there for him.”
Kardashian emphasized that the decision was not about her relationship with Tristan, but about honoring her bond with Andrea and providing a stable, loving home for Amari.
“I also know how much Amari means to Andrea, and she passed away because she had a sudden heart attack,” she said. “Me being in a relationship or not with Tristan has nothing to do with my commitment to Andrea or to Amari. He deserves someone who will be there for him and provide a great lifestyle.”
Teaching Her Kids About Empathy
Kardashian, who shares daughter True and son Tatum with Thompson, said having Amari in their home has had a positive impact on her children.
“I think it’s so important for my kids, my nieces and nephews, to be exposed to all different types of people,” she said. “It teaches everyone compassion and understanding. Amari is disabled, sure, but he’s also just like us at the same time.”
She added, “He can’t verbally talk, but if you know him well enough, he can definitely express himself, and you see the glimmer in his eyes. He’s such an amazing, amazing young man. And I’m so proud and honored that I have Amari in my life.”
Kardashian has shared sweet moments with Amari on social media, including celebrating his 18th birthday and supporting him at a recent dance recital.
In a confessional from an episode of “The Kardashians,” she said, “Amari has never and will never be a burden. Amari is one of the most special souls I have ever met.”
Her continued involvement, even after her romantic relationship with Thompson ended, reflects her deep commitment to family. “Amari deserves my love and care, regardless of where me and Tristan stand,” she said.
