All About Joel McHale’s ‘LA Grandma’ on ‘Celebrity IOU’

The hit HGTV series “Celebrity IOU” is all about stars giving back to those who have positively impacted their lives. On Wednesday, July 16th, actor and comedian Joel McHale joins Drew and Jonathan Scott to pay homage to his “LA Grandma,” Ruth, who is very dear to his heart. HGTV shared a preview Reel of the episode, which features McHale throwing the Property Brothers for a hilarious loop while pulling down a ceiling fan.

“That’s fine, right? You’ll fix it,” McHale jokingly says as he rips blades off the fan. Although Drew and Scott try to be the voice of reason in the clip, there’s no stopping the “Community” star from “helping” with this part of the project. This preview suggests plenty of comedy in store for viewers, but we may see some of the actor’s softer side, too. Another HGTV Instagram update promises “a luxurious hotel-style bedroom oasis” for McHale’s beloved grandma.

Grandma Ruth Lent Something Special to McHale’s Wife on Their Wedding Day

McHale isn’t known to shed a tear on camera, but that may change during his “Celebrity IOU” appearance. It seems the episode’s title, “Can Joel McHale Get Emotional?” is perfectly fitting. As TV Regular shared, the actor reportedly gets emotional while discussing how important grandma Ruth is to him and his family. McHale will share warm memories and stories about their close relationship throughout the renovation.

Although the comedian hasn’t publicly spoken about grandma Ruth on many occasions, there are signs of how much she means to him and his wife, Sarah Williams McHale, on social media. In 2020, Sarah posted a sweet throwback photo in honor of their anniversary. In addition to expressing her love for her husband, Sarah highlighted how her mother and grandma Ruth contributed to her wedding outfit. “Dress was my mom’s wedding dress from 1967,” she said. “Pop-it beads courtesy of Grandma Ruth.”

HGTV’s episode schedule lists funnyman Josh Gad as the show’s next guest star, followed by Jane Seymour. Fans will also get a chance to see Tyra Banks lend her eye for design to a stunning renovation for her best friend.
