For years, Israel “Izzy” Battres appeared as the beloved contractor on HGTV’s hit show “Flip or Flop,” starring former couple Tarek El Moussa and Christina Haack. But starring on his own show, “Izzy Does It,” is a whole new ballgame.
On February 26, 2025, the Southern California contractor told “Good Day LA” that the response to his new show, which premiered on February 5, has been “very positive, overwhelming, very humbling.”
“A lot of positive feedback out there,” he continued. “People love the designs, people love the renovations.”
Seeing Battres back on HGTV, in his show and on a couple of episodes of “The Flip Off,” including as a judge on the February 26 show, has many people asking him for advice on their own homes. Battres is happy people can lean on him for guidance, but still gets nervous about showing his clients what he’s done for them.
Izzy Battres Says the Best Way to Cut Renovation Costs is to Monitor the ‘Bling’ in the Budget.
Battres’ new show is a family affair, following him and his family as they run their home renovation business in Santa Ana, California. In the eight-episode premiere season, according to HGTV, Battres uses “his expertise, relatable budgets and cost saving techniques to bring luxury designs to homeowners.”
“Every family’s unique, every family has a story, every family has their own culture,” he told “Good Day LA” host Araksya Karapetyan. “So that’s where we get to have a lot of fun.”
But Battres admitted the not-so-fun part of renovations are trying to cut costs — especially in Southern California.
“It is extremely tough,” he said. “It all depends on your scope of work, what you want to do.”
Battres said that some costs — like building materials and construction — are fairly static, while things like high-end design and decor — which he called “bling” — can vary greatly.
“You know, all of the costs really comes on the finishes,” Battres continued. “All the bling — that’s what costs. If you can taper down some of the bling (that helps).”
Izzy Battres Gets Nervous About Revealing Final Renovations to Homeowners on ‘Izzy Does It’
One element of being on TV that Battres still hasn’t grown accustomed to is debuting a home’s new look for his clients.
“I’m always nervous when the homeowners walk up to the front door before the big reveal,” he told HGTV.com in early February. “I start asking myself if I did a good enough job because I don’t want them to like their new home, I want them to love it!”
“When they do (love it), it’s like Christmas and the Super Bowl all in one,” Battres said. “I’m always so grateful they’ve put their trust in me and given me the opportunity to remake their homes. It’s just a really good feeling when we put it all out there workwise and we’re rewarded by their happiness.”
“Izzy Does It” airs Wednesday nights on HGTV at 9 p.m. Eastern time.
