If you’ve ever fallen down a rabbit hole into a “House Hunters” marathon on HGTV (and let’s be real, we all have), chances are you could clock that narrator’s voice faster than you could pick between subway tiles or quartz countertops. That warm, slightly sassy tone walking you through open floor plan debates and closet-size drama? That’s Andromeda Dunker; the woman who’s been the voice of thousands of episodes of the hit show, “House Hunters,” and its ever-expanding list of spin-offs.
And here’s the fun twist: despite being one of the most recognizable voices on TV, Dunker spent years as a total mystery to viewers.
Years of House-Hunting Stories
Dunker first took on the gig back in 2009, when “House Hunters” and “House Hunters International” were the only kids on the block. No marathon lineups. No ten different versions of the show. Just two solid staples.
“My first year, there was only just House Hunters and House Hunters International at that time, and not every day like how it is now. There have been like 10 spinoffs now. So I had no idea it was going to explode into this much work,” she told Buzzfeed News in 2017.
Since then, her voice has popped up on everything from “House Hunters Renovation” to “House Hunters Off the Grid.” And while fans love her easygoing delivery, Dunker confessed she didn’t always think her voice was anything special.
“In my head, growing up, my voice sounded annoying and nasally. The first time I heard it in a microphone I was like, ‘Oh, wow. That sounds kind of nice!’” she recalled.
From Behind the Mic to On Screen
Part of Dunker’s mystique comes from how long she stayed off-camera. “I’ve remained in the shadows… The conventional wisdom for voiceover actors is you are kind of heard and not seen. It’s just kind of the way it’s always been,” she told Buzzfeed News years ago.
That changed in 2019, when HGTV finally gave viewers a peek at the woman behind the mic. In a short video tour of her own home, Dunker let fans see her personal space; proving she can spot charm and character in real life just as easily as she does on screen.
After years as an unseen narrator to finally stepping into the spotlight, Dunker’s story is proof that sometimes the most familiar voices belong to faces we’ve never seen. And next time you’re watching “House Hunters” and hear her walk you through a three-bedroom “with great bones” versus a two-bedroom “with endless potential,” you’ll know exactly who’s making you pick sides… and you might just picture her smiling about it.
“House Hunters” currently airs every night at 10:00pm ET on HGTV.
