HGTV Designer Erin Napier has a confession.
In a new Instagram post, the “Home Town” star asks, “Have y’all ever been emotionally attached to someone else’s house?”
The home in question has icon-level status- at least it does in Laurel, Mississippi.
And for Ben and Erin Napier, it’s a trip back in time, as they restore the home’s original 1950’s retro charm, falling in love with the property in the process.
At one point in the video, Erin leans into a newly upholstered colorful chair and purrs, “I’m obsessed.”
The episode features some design details that Ben calls “quirky” and seem to thrill the couple who live there as much as they delight the Napiers.
Erin Napier Relies Heavily On Inspiration from Her Garden
As fans have watched Erin Napier’s design style evolve over the years on “Home Town,” she has consistently relied on her love of gardening for inspiration.
Whether the house requires a throwback to the 50’s or a more preppy vibe, Erin works botanicals and natural colors into every house she and her husband transform.
In a recent article in Southern Living, Ben Napier explained the years of planning that have gone into their Mississippi garden and the greenhouse he built for Erin and their young daughters.
The magazine explains his choices, saying he planted Limelight’ hydrangeas beacuse Erin carried them in her wedding bouquet; Japanese maples, because they’re her favorite trees; and sweet olives for their beloved scent.
He even planted roses along the fence in homage to Erin’s love of the movie “Titanic,” laughing and explaining, “Because in Titanic, Rose climbed up on the rail, so you’ve got to have roses on the railing.”
For daughters Helen, 7, and Mae, who turns 4 this month, the couple added blackberry bushes, pear trees, and a wide variety of flowers. “They love to make bouquets for friends. When people are coming over for dinner, they’ll pick flowers for our guests without us asking,” Erin told the magazine.
And Erin loves being able to gather ingredients for their dinner salad right from the back yard. In an Instagram post, Erin says, “A salad garden is just right for me. I do love that I can, you know, plan on whatever meat I’m gonna cook, roast a chicken, and then I can walk out here to the garden to make the salad.”
Erin & Ben’s Design Style Captures Imaginations and Ratings
It’s a design style that works. The couple has not one but two hits on their hands with both “Home Town” and “Home Town Takeover” among HGTV’s most popular shows.
In fact, season three of “Home Town Takeover” proved more popular than ever. Their overhaul of the small Florida town of Sebring caught the attention of more than 1.2 million viewers.
And Erin and Ben think they know why.
In an interview with Fox News, the couple says Sebring’s appeal plays a big role. “It was built as a resort town before the coasts of Florida were really getting developed and blown up,” said Ben.
“Before the theme parks, and that is the old Florida that our grandparents went on vacation,” Erin added. “We see all their photos. I have my grandparents’ photos from going to those parts of Florida, and we want it back.”
