Romance is alive and well between HGTV couple Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson, but the duo says one key to their happiness is sleeping in separate bedrooms. The “Married to Real Estate” stars revealed their unconventional sleeping arrangements in an interview with Us Weekly — published on March 14, 2025 — about their secrets to a happy marriage.
“We have rediscovered the power of our personal space,” Sherrod told the outlet, revealing that she and her husband of nearly 15 years are part of a growing trend among American couples.
Egypt Sherrod Says Mike Jackson Can ‘Snore As Loud As He Wants’ in His Bedroom
Sherrod, 48, and Jackson, 46, live in Atlanta with two of their three daughters, 13-year-old Kendall and six-year-old Harper. They also raised Jackson’s daughter from a previous relationship, Simone, who’s now 23.
Since the HGTV couple began dating in 2004, they’ve worked at strengthening their relationship with tools and tricks — including sleeping separately most nights, they told Us Weekly.
“He can go to sleep when he wants, snore as loud as he wants, play whatever he wants on TV,” Sherrod said. “And I can have my candles and my Solfeggio (sound) frequencies playing all night. I can sleep with the fan on without complaint. We love that and then coming together with a little rat-a-tat-tat (at the door).”
The couple is part of a growing trend frequently called a “sleep divorce,” according to The Week, that some insist helps them get a better night’s sleep. In March 2023, a survey by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine showed that 35% of American couples sleep in separate rooms occasionally or consistently. Among Millennial couples, the number is even higher — 43%.
Sherrod told Us Weekly they’re “very practical people” who also don’t feel like they have to schedule date nights to be romantic. She said it’s hard for Jackson, a builder who runs his own renovation company, to get away for lunch sometimes, “so I’ll bring lunch to him.”
Those lunch drop-offs are just as good as a night out, she said, explaining that their dates don’t “have to be grand; it doesn’t have to be a five-star restaurant (or) some experience where we’re swept off somewhere.”
Egypt Sherrod Says Their Family is Considering a Move Overseas
Now in their fourth season of “Married to Real Estate,” which premiered on March 12, Sherrod and Jackson live and work together around the clock, so they also try to prioritize family time.
“When you work together, especially for what we do, it’s almost 24/7,” Jackson told Us Weekly. “We have to remind ourselves to turn it off before we get in the house, so we can focus on having a good meal or dealing with the kids.”
The couple also looks for ways to enrich their life as a family, even if that means doing things outside the box. Sherrod told TV Insider that they’ve even been contemplating moving the family out of the country for a while.
“We’re heading on a family vacation as soon as the show premieres,” Sherrod revealed. “We’re going to explore. We’re talking about maybe even living overseas for a while. Just to have more experiences. Experience over materials is our motto with our kids. We just want them to be able to see the world. Time will tell. Let me just say that.”
“Married to Real Estate” airs on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern time.
