Chip and Joanna, who have been married for 20 years, discovered that sometimes you have to shake things up when you’ve been together so long.

The couple discovered a new way to connect — while also getting in the best shape of their lives.

In a January 2025 interview with People, Chip and Joanna shared how working out together is beneficial for their relationship and their health.

“We joke that we’ve known each other for 25 years and we’ve never once worked out together,” Joanna explained.

She continued, “Last year I said, ‘Chip, let’s start working out because I want to be young for the kids.’ I feel like every choice I make now will affect me at 70, and I don’t want to wait until I’m 70 to be like, ‘Oops I need to fix some stuff.'”

She said she told her husband, “We need to do something to make us stay strong” and they committed to an exercise routine that they do together.

“And so we just got into this, and it’s a totally different thing for us,” Joanna said. “We’ve never worked out together before and now we do.”

According to Joanna, the couple meet with a virtual personal trainer in their home gym. It’s been a fun new experience for the owners of the Magnolia empire.

“It’s just us pushing each other and holding each other accountable,” Joanna shared. “It’s been this whole other thing, and it feels good to do it.”

She added, “So it’s been fun — we’ve done so much together in the past that it’s like this whole new stage in our marriage.”

Joanna also shared how their 6-year-old son’s curiosity and love of exploring inspired her new children’s book “The World Needs the Wonder You See.”

“What I love about the book is realizing how much wisdom there is to be gleaned from little children,” Joanna said.

She noted that children can teach adults so much. Joanna explained, “It’s like, what are the kids teaching me right now in this season of life for me? What is Crew teaching me? And then how can I articulate that and bring that to life in a book?”
