Wands at the ready! The Wizarding World is coming back to life on the small screen with HBO’s highly anticipated “Harry Potter” TV series. Production has officially begun, and we finally have our first look at a brand new generation of witches and wizards who will take fans back to Hogwarts. With a fresh cast, big-name producers, and a promise of a “faithful adaptation” of J.K. Rowling’s beloved books, here’s everything we know so far about the new “Harry Potter” series.
Meet the Cast and Crew of the ‘Harry Potter’ TV Series
HBO unveiled the first-look photo of Dominic McLaughlin as the new Harry Potter, stepping into the role made famous by Daniel Radcliffe. Joining him to form the new Golden Trio are Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Veteran actors in the adult ensemble include:
- John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
- Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall
- Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
- Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
- Katherine Parkinson as Molly Weasley
- Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy
- Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy
- Bel Powley and Daniel Rigby as Petunia and Vernon Dursley
The growing cast will also feature Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, and Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch. Anton Lesser will portray wandmaker Garrick Ollivander. Other familiar names include Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, and Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge.
Behind the scenes, the series showrunner is “Succession” alum Francesca Gardiner. Acclaimed director Mark Mylod is also attached to helm multiple episodes. Rowling, Neil Blair, and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV are the executive producers, alongside David Heyman of Heyday Films. Heyman is the same producer behind the original film franchise.
A Book-by-Book, Season-by-Season Adaptation
Unlike the eight films that condensed Rowling’s seven novels, HBO’s “Harry Potter” series will span a full decade and dedicate one season to each book. That means fans will get a deeper dive into everything from the intricacies of “The Chamber of Secrets” to the rich lore of “The Half-Blood Prince.” And yes, that gives fans a chance to fall in love (or hate) again with characters like Peeves, Winky the house-elf, and Charlie Weasley who were left out of the movies.
Per Deadline, Warner Bros. Discovery has emphasized that the new adaptation will be “authentic to the original books.”
“Each season will be produced with the same epic craft, love and care this global franchise is known for,” the studio said in a statement.
Most importantly, while the new series offers a fresh take, the beloved “Harry Potter” films will remain part of the franchise canon and will still be available for fans to stream worldwide.
The ‘Harry Potter’ Magic Will Return in 2027
As of July 2025, production is officially underway at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK. This is the very same location where much of the original film series was shot. When HBO released the first official image of McLaughlin in character, it sparked excitement across social media and Potterhead forums.
No exact release date has been confirmed, but the “Harry Potter” series is currently scheduled to debut sometime in 2027 on both HBO and its streaming service, HBO Max. That gives producers plenty of time to craft the richly detailed magical world and gives fans time to re-read the books (again).
Gardiner and the rest of the creative team are staying quiet about plot specifics. But, the faithful season-by-season structure promises extended screen time for key subplots and characters that were missing or shortened in the original movies.
With a talented new cast, high-caliber showrunners, and a decade-long commitment from HBO, the new “Harry Potter” series is shaping up to be a truly ambitious retelling of the iconic story.
