‘Harry Potter’ TV Series: HBO Reportedly Plans to Keep 1 Character’s Casting a Mystery

HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” reboot just added a major character — but they’re not telling anyone who it is. According to a new report, the iconic role of Voldemort has been filled, yet the actor’s name will remain a mystery until the series premieres in 2027.

The Dark Lord Has Been Cast—But Who Is Playing Him?

According to Redanian Intelligence, a source close to the production confirmed that Voldemort has been cast in HBO’s “Harry Potter” series and will appear in “several episodes.” However, the identity of the actor is being kept top secret, with no plans to announce the casting publicly before the show’s release

That choice fits with the Dark Lord’s infamous nickname — He Who Must Not Be Named — but whether HBO can keep that secret is another story. Just five months ago, a surprise cameo in Peacock’s “The Office” spinoff was spoiled. According to CBR, reporter Jeff Sneider revealed Oscar Nuñez’s return as Oscar Martínez in “The Paper,” later admitting, “Had I known it was supposed to be a surprise, I wouldn’t have said anything.” If Peacock couldn’t contain a leak, can HBO really keep Voldemort’s identity locked down until 2027?

While Ralph Fiennes brought Voldemort to life in the original film series — beginning with “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”—he’s not expected to reprise the role. Still, the actor recently shared some advice for his successor: “Make sure you can handle the long flowing robes and don’t trip over them. Practice your long flowing robe walk.”

Voldemort Casting Frontrunner, Plus the Rest of the ‘Harry Potter’ Cast

So who could take over one of the most iconic villains in movie history? Fans have been campaigning for Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, and even Fiennes has reportedly given his blessing. Earlier this year, Deadline reported that when Warner Bros. Television Group CEO Channing Dungey was asked whether Murphy was being considered for Professor Quirrell — another villainous role that ended up going to Luke Thallon — and replied, “We’re still weighing a couple of different options there… That’s an important role to get right.”

As for the rest of the cast, the lineup is already stacked. Dominic McLaughlin will star as Harry Potter, joined by Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. John Lithgow is set to play Albus Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Recurring characters include Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, and Louise Brealey as Madam Hooch.

The highly anticipated “Harry Potter” series is expected to premiere on HBO in 2027.
