‘Harry Potter’ Actor, 11, Sweetly Opens Up for First Time About HBO Series Debut

Imagine stepping into the shoes of a character you spent your entire childhood admiring. For Dominic McLaughlin, that dream has turned into a fairytale reality. After beating out thousands who were eyeing the iconic role, the 11-year-old landed the role of a lifetime as Harry Potter in HBO’s upcoming series.

Speaking publicly for the first time about the casting, McLaughlin shared how surreal it feels to bring the beloved boy wizard to life.

While promoting his new film “Grow,” McLaughlin told BBC News he still can’t believe he’s been given the opportunity. “A bit surreal to be honest, because I was always a huge ‘Harry Potter’ fan when I was younger,” he said. “And it was like the dream role, of course, so I’m thrilled to be able to be doing it.”


HBO’s ‘Harry Potter’ Series in Production

The highly anticipated “Harry Potter” series is currently filming in the U.K., and production is expected to continue through spring 2026.

McLaughlin leads the new trio alongside Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.

The three young stars were selected from more than 30,000 hopefuls who auditioned last fall.

HBO released the first image of McLaughlin in full costume last month, showing him in Hogwarts robes, round glasses & the iconic lightning bolt scar.

Soon after, a first look at Nick Frost as Hagrid was also revealed.


A Star-Studded Cast Brings Hogwarts to Life

The series will feature an impressive ensemble cast of established actors & rising talent. John Lithgow is set to portray Albus Dumbledore, while Janet McTeer will play Minerva McGonagall. Paapa Essiedu takes on the role of Severus Snape, Katherine Parkinson will play Molly Weasley & Lox Pratt is Draco Malfoy.

Additional cast members include Johnny Flynn as Lucius Malfoy, Leo Earley as Seamus Finnigan, Alessia Leoni as Parvati Patil, Sienna Moosah as Lavender Brown, Bertie Carvel as Cornelius Fudge, Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley, Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley, Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey as Madam Rolanda Hooch & Anton Lesser as Garrick Ollivander.

The “Harry Potter” series is set to premiere in 2027 on HBO & HBO Max. Francesca Gardiner, known for “His Dark Materials” and “Killing Eve,” will serve as writer and showrunner, with “Succession” director Mark Mylod directing.
