For the first time in his adult life, musician and TV personality Jaymes Vaughan can eat without getting sick, thanks to a successful surgery for a condition he’s been suffering from for years. His husband, Hallmark star Jonathan Bennett, shared the emotional update on August 10, 2025.
“This is the first time over the over 3,400 meals I’ve sat across from him where I didn’t feel like he was fighting for his life just to get through it,” Bennett captioned a social media photo that showed Vaughan chewing his food at a restaurant and getting choked up — not by the meal, but by the sheer emotion of being able to swallow his food normally.
“My husband has a condition that made it impossible for him to eat without throwing up for almost his entire adult life,” Bennett revealed, and then shared more about the procedure that is changing Vaughan’s life.

Opening up about Vaughn’s surgery, Bennett shared in his post, “Yesterday he got the procedure to open up his throat and this is his first meal after fixing what’s called a Schatzki ring. A Schatzki ring, also known as a lower esophageal ring, is a ring of tissue that forms at the lower end of the esophagus, near where it connects with the stomach. It can make eating incredibly difficult.”
The symptoms of a Schatzki ring typically develop after the age of 25, according to the Cleveland Clinic, and can cause food to get stuck. A person with the condition then struggles to swallow and may experience burning or sharp pains in their chest when they eat.
For two decades, Vaughan didn’t know why he had so much trouble eating nor that he had a Schatzki ring, named for the radiologist who first discovered the condition, per Cleveland Clinic.
“Sharing this in case it could help someone who has this condition but didn’t know about it for 20 years like my husband,” Bennett wrote in his post. “Talk to your doctor and ask questions, you never know how much it can help your life.”
