Cameron Mathison Shares Why He’ll Be Saying Goodbye to His Foster Dog & It’s Bittersweet

Hallmark alum Cameron Mathison shared a big update with fans via social media, but it was not one that many were expecting or hoping to hear. Recently, the former star of the “Hannah Swensen” movies revealed he had taken in a foster dog.

Now, Mathison reveals that he pup won’t be staying with him all that long.

Cameron Mathison Gushed Over His Foster Dog, Hunter

On August 17, Mathison shared a new video via his Instagram page. His foster dog, Hunter, was on Mathison’s bed and kept quite busy chomping on a toy as the actor spoke.

Mathison said, “He’s doing amazing. He couldn’t be sweeter. He’s so good with people and other dogs and he’s getting better and better on the leash all the time.”

Hunter has some anxiety he’s working through, Mathison noted, and it sounds as if the actor thinks there is a permanent home for Hunter coming soon. Mathison explained that Hunter “really needs a nice stable home with a little bit more space than I have.”

He noted that he is currently in a rental apartment temporarily. His family’s home burned down last January during the wildfires, so Mathison is in a smaller space than is typical. In addition, he shared, his current lifestyle is not necessarily ideal for keeping a dog like Hunter.

The Hallmark Alum Admitted He’d Hoped to Keep the Dog

“I know many people were hoping for a foster fail… and so was I,” Mathison admitted. A “foster fail” is when a person fostering an animal “fails” because they decide to keep the animal permanently.

Mathison continued, “I think if we really consider what’s best for him, it’s a more stable household with more space (at least until I rebuild) and certainly some outdoor space for him … he’s a big boy.”

Several families have already expressed an interest in adopting Hunter, but Mathison also asked that anyone interested let him know in the comment section.

Some fans commented with notes urging Mathison to rethink his decision. Others praised him for taking on a foster dog.

One fan shared, “Oh my heart can’t take it @cameronmathison you not being able to adopt him permanently, please just make sure where ever Hunter goes you keep in [touch] to make sure he is doing well.”

Another comment read, “And this is why you were and will always be a great dog dad. ‘What is best for the dog…'”

Mathison’s first post about Hunter came on August 9. The actor noted Hunter’s resemblance to his former dog, Red, who died a little less than two years ago.
