Fans are still wondering who didn’t make it out of the OR after that explosive finale. Grey’s Anatomy fans are buzzing after season 21 ended with a literal bang — and even the cast is in the dark about who survived the hospital explosion.
As per a report in US Weekly, Camilla Luddington and Harry Shum Jr. showed up at the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s NextGen Summer Party on June 22 and admitted they’re just as anxious as viewers.

“I have no idea. I have a text chain going on with so many cast members that are like, ‘What do you think?’” Luddington said. “And we — Nobody knows. No one knows, which is terrifying.”
Grey’s Cast Group Chats Are Just as Unhinged as Fan Theories
Luddington, who’s played Dr. Jo Wilson since season 9, confessed that she’s always a little nervous when season finales roll around. “We’ve seen too much, and we know too much. There’s not a single season I’m not worried about.”
Shum Jr., who joined the show in season 19 as Dr. Benson “Blue” Kwan, had a theory straight out of Grey’s playbook.

He was quoted as saying: “Hopefully [it is] not me. Then hopefully, it’s some weird thing where it’s in someone’s mind,” he joked. “I don’t know, but I don’t think that’s the case. So we’ll see.”
Explosive Finale—A Bomb, a Tank, and a Wild Cliffhanger
In the May finale, Piper Perabo’s character brought a flammable acetylene tank into the OR to force Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) to perform a risky surgery on her daughter.
Things escalated quickly. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) attempted to rescue interns Simone (Alexis Floyd) and Adams (Niko Terho) from the danger zone, but the tank leaked and subsequently exploded.
So far, only Meredith and Ben Warren (Jason George) are confirmed survivors. The rest? Just like the cast, the fans are still in the dark.
Even the Cast Feels the Fear When the Writers Say “We Need to Talk”
Shum Jr. admitted that cast members stay on edge every time the showrunner wants to “chat.”
The report quotes Shum saying, “When the writers come to say, ‘Hey, I need to talk to you about something,’ it’s always like, ‘Oh, please don’t be that reason,’” he said. “But you know, that’s what keeps everyone on their toes.”
“This particular one — everyone that I’ve encountered — even fans that have come up to me and said this one was just a cliffhanger that they haven’t felt before.”
Pregnancy Bombshell and a Husband in the Danger Zone
Season 21 ended with Jo revealing she’s pregnant again, right before the explosion.
Her husband, Dr. Atticus Lincoln (Chris Carmack), is still unaccounted for.

“I just hope he’s alive,” Luddington said. “And if there’s injury — what that is and what that looks like — I have no idea.”
She added with raw honesty: “I just hope that my [onscreen] husband is OK. Because she’s gonna need that support, and they need it from each other. So I think it’s gonna throw a wrench in things, and it’s gonna be a lot. They have two kids and two kids on the way.”
Paging Season 22: Stat
Season 22 returns this fall, and fans aren’t the only ones on edge.
In a report published by The Hollywood Reporter, Harry Shum Jr. echoed fan concerns about the season 21 finale. Meanwhile, showrunner Meg Marinis confirmed that, aside from Meredith and Warren, no other characters are confirmed to have survived, leaving everyone’s fate uncertain until the season 22 return this fall.
With multiple lives hanging in the balance, a pregnancy twist, and a cast just as clueless as the viewers, it’s shaping up to be classic Grey’s Anatomy chaos.
In other words, don’t get too attached… again.
