Courteney Cox is celebrating her man. The “Friends” star took to Instagram to share some adorable photos of her and Johnny McDaid in celebration of his birthday.
“Happy Birthday J,” she captioned the post. “You mean so much to so many, but you mean everything to me. I love you,” followed by a green heart emoji.
Actress Isla Fisher, one of Cox’s longtime friends, commented cheekily, “He means more to me to be fair.” Fisher’s comment may seem odd to some, but others got her Aussie humor. Fisher and her now-ex-husband, Sacha Baron Cohen, are actually partly responsible for getting Cox and McDaid together.
How Isla Fisher and Sacha Baron Cohen Played Matchmaker for Courteney Cox
On a 2022 episode of “The Howard Stern Show,” Cox recalled that she and Ed Sheeran were hanging out at her house when he asked if he could have some friends over.
“I said, ‘Of course.’ And he invited Johnny, Gary Lightbody — both of them from “Snow Patrol — Taylor Swift,” Cox said. “Just some great musicians, and they all came over. And I had a fun group anyway. It was Sacha Baron Cohen and Isla Fisher, and Jennifer [Aniston] was there.”
“Isla went up to Sacha and said, ‘Sacha, Courteney wants to go out with Johnny,'” Cox continued. “So, Sacha walks up to Gary and Johnny — and I’m going to cuss now — and says, ‘Hey, Courteney wants to [expletive] one of you from Snow Patrol, and it’s not you, Gary.”
She remembered that Harry Styles was also standing there and threatened to do something to Johnny if he didn’t call Cox. He didn’t have to worry because McDaid called her the next day, and a week later, they went on their first date.
They Ended Their Engagement in 2015
Cox and McDaid’s relationship has had its share of ups and downs, but the couple has managed to navigate things on their terms. While they originally got engaged less than a year after they began dating, they ended their engagement in 2015. Since then, they’ve been happier than ever.
“He’s not my fiancé. We were engaged to be married, but now we’re just together,” Cox said when she appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” in 2019. “We broke off our engagement, and he moved to England, then we got back together, and it’s actually better than it was before.”
“I don’t know if you can put a label on what makes us work so well,” McDaid concurred to “Us Magazine.” “But I know that I’ve never loved like I love this woman. So if that’s enough, then that’s enough.”
