Raven-Symoné is remembering her longtime friend and former “Cosby Show” co-star Malcolm-Jamal Warner with an emotional tribute.
Two days after Warner’s passing at age 54 following an accidental drowning in Costa Rica on July 20, Raven posted a black screen on Instagram with the words “I love you” written in white. She followed it with a heartfelt voice message reflecting on the impact Warner had on her life and career.
“Words cannot describe the pain and sadness and surprise that I feel with the recent loss of MJW,” she said.
In her message, Raven also spoke to the love she had for Warner’s presence and spirit. “He gave the best advice, he gave the best hugs. And his smile will always be a huge bright f–king white smile in my head forever. I love you and I know you’re watching over all of us now.” She added that her “heart and soul, and hugs and kisses” go out to his family during this difficult time.
Reportedly, Warner was pulled underwater by a current while swimming. He was later rescued by beachgoers but was declared lifeless at the scene. His official cause was listed as asphyxia due to drowning, according to Costa Rican authorities.

Their Lasting Friendship Began on ‘The Cosby Show’

Raven and Warner’s friendship goes back to their years on “The Cosby Show”, where Warner played Theo Huxtable and Raven portrayed Olivia Kendall. Over time, the pair developed a bond beyond the screen that was rooted in mutual respect and loyalty.
In a 2016 interview with theGrio, Warner addressed criticism Raven received during her time on The View, making it clear he stood by her. “Raven’s my homie,” he said. “Raven… Keisha… everybody. We’re all mad cool.”
“I think it’s important to realize where her frame of reference is,” he continued. “She’s speaking from her heart. She’s being genuine about it, and I think there are people who genuinely think like she does.”
Warner’s support of Raven over the years stood out to many who witnessed their camaraderie, both publicly and privately.
As Raven put it in her tribute, “He was a big brother, he was a beacon, he was one of the most multifaceted, talented men. So gentle.”
Several celebrities honored Warner’s legacy, including Geoffrey Owens, who called him “a sweet and sensitive soul,” and Adam Sandler, who recalled their walks and weekends spent together. Tracee Ellis Ross remembered him as “warm, gentle, present,” while Beyoncé wrote, “Rest in power, Malcolm-Jamal Warner… You will be missed.”
