Willie Nelson is one of the most revered musicians of all time. His impact as a country singer crosses genres and has been multi-generational. As many know, his son, Lukas Nelson, has followed in his dad’s footsteps as he’s the lead singer of Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real as well as a solo artist. Now, he’s opening up about his relationship with the icon.
Nelson spoke about his father and how he wants to spend as much time with him as possible in a recent interview with Rolling Stone. The singer told the outlet, “Every second of every day, I am trying to be with my father if I can.”
However, he went on to discuss how he’s also working toward building a legacy as a musician. According to him, “But he, of all people, understands the importance of striking while the iron’s hot. And I’ve always wanted to make him proud by being a hard worker, being self-sufficient, and never needing to ask him for anything.”
He continued, “And it takes me away from my dad sometimes, but I know that he knows why because he had to do the same thing when he was young.”
Nelson Recently Opened Up About Making His Dad Proud
Nelson has much to live up to, and judging my comments online about his music, he’s doing a solid job. He was recently on “The Howard Stern Show” and discussed his musical roots as well as his desire to make his iconic father proud.
Howard asked when he began playing music, and Nelson said, “10 or 11 when I started playing and writing music at the same time.” He was then asked if any part of him started playing music as a way to get closer to his father.
Nelson responded, “That’s exactly why I started playing music. Because my dad would leave all the time. I would be naturally upset as a little kid, and I knew that if I learned how to be a great musician, then we would be bonded forever.”
He then said he didn’t try to be as great as his father. Instead, his desire to play music was “just about speaking the same language. Being part of the club that understands music.”
He Released an Album
Nelson has already achieved success in the music industry. His band went on an indefinite hiatus in 2024, and he has been continuing his solo career since. He released his debut album, “American Romance,” in June 2025. It was preceded by the single “Ain’t Done” in March. Nelson has a deal with Sony Music Nashville.
Notably, he worked on the soundtrack for 2018’s “A Star is Born,” which made him a Grammy winner.
